Celebration to Mark Juneteenth Day at UT Dallas
June 15, 2009
UT Dallas will celebrate Juneteenth with an “It’s A Family Affair” theme on Friday, June 19.
Faculty and staff members are invited to submit family pictures to be displayed in a photo album at the event.
The event is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the UT Dallas Gazebo. The rain location will be the Galaxy Rooms in the Student Union.
Plans include a bakeoff, free food (while it lasts), entertainment, educational information and music.
Juneteenth celebrates African American freedom.
News of the Emancipation Proclamation didn’t reach Texas until June 19, 1865, almost two years after it was enacted. Juneteenth honors the day that federal troops arrived at Galveston Island under Union Gen. Gordon Granger to implement emancipation of slaves.
Pictures should be e-mailed to multicultural@utdallas.edu no later than Wednesday, June 17.
