UT Dallas staff members won two gold, six silver and four bronze medals and an overall silver in their division during the 2009 Richardson Corporate Challenge games, which raised $118,000 for the Special Olympics.

The city of Richardson organizes the annual event, which pits area businesses against one another in a 10-week competition that ended Oct. 28.

One of UT Dallas’ inspirations in the Corporate Challenge this year was 26-year-old Max Adamczyk, a Special Olympics athlete.

Max AdamczykMax represented UT Dallas during this year’s ceremony parade.

“I hope you all had a lot of fun competing in your Olympics!” he said.

Max competed in Special Olympics bowling, track and bocce ball. In past competitions, he swam, cycled and played basketball.

“I like to be a part of all the fun,” he said, “and I love getting a medal on stage.”

He lives in Dallas with his parents, is a member of the grounds-keeping crew at his church and has participated in Therapeutic Theatre group for eight years where he loves rehearsing and dressing up in costumes.

UT Dallas competed against businesses such as TriQuint Semiconductors, Convergys and Hilton.

The challenge, held over a two-month period beginning in late August, included such sports as basketball, flag football and a 5K run, as well as badminton, billiards, bass fishing and poker.

UT Dallas had the most participants (124) in the annual 5K run/walk, which was held on campus and led by team captain David Holmes, director of architecture and infrastructure services in Information Resources department.

A strong show of Comet Pride earned UT Dallas the “Spirit Stick” during the opening ceremony.

The competition ended with a closing ceremony at the Richardson Civic Center.
