International Educators Compile Haitian Aid List

Jan. 15, 2010

On Tuesday, a 7.0 magnitude earthquake hit Port-au-Prince, Haiti.  The death toll from the temblor “could be between 45,000 and 50,000, with a further 3 million people hurt or homeless,” a senior Haitian Red Cross official said on Thursday.

UT Dallas students, faculty or staff interested in helping those affected are encouraged to select from among a list of charitable organizations active in the nation.  The list was compiled by the Association of International Education Administrators, a membership organization engaged in advancing the international dimensions of higher education.

“The call to be a responsible global citizen is strong in times of tragedy or great need,” said Dr. Rodolfo Hernández Guerrero, director of the Office of International Education and the Center for U.S.-Mexico Studies.  “The UT Dallas community traditionally has been generous and fervent in their efforts to help others, and I expect the Haitian earthquake will be no different.”

For those interested in helping immediately, text “Haiti” to “90999” and a donation of $10 will be given automatically to the Red Cross to help with relief efforts, charged to your cell phone bill.  Another option charged to your cell phone bill is to text “Yele” to “501501” and a donation of $5 will be given automatically to Yele Haiti.
