Honor Recognizes Operations Management Expert

Mar. 8, 2010

School of Management Professor Suresh P. Sethi has been named to the inaugural class of fellows of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM).

The honor salutes Dr. Sethi for his work in optimal control applied to the management sciences and economics.

He joins 193 other honorees as a charter member in the SIAM Fellows Program, which recognizes contributions to the field of applied math and computational science.

Dr. Sethi is the Charles and Nancy Davidson Distinguished Professor of Operations Management and director of The School of Management Center for Intelligent Supply Networks.

He is internationally known for applying quantitative methods to manufacturing and operations management and has also made fundamental contributions to finance, economics and marketing. His current research interests include supply chain management, inventory control and mathematical finance.

“I have been formulating and treating management science and economics problems with the use of optimal control theory since the days of my doctoral studies, and my textbook on the topic is based on many of these applications,” Dr. Sethi said. “So this recognition from a premier math society means a great deal to me. I am also jubilant for the honor it brings to my school.”

A member of The School of Management faculty since 1997, Dr. Sethi has written seven books and published more than 350 research papers. He serves as a departmental editor for the journal Production and Operations Management and as corresponding editor of the SIAM Journal on Control and Optimization.

His honors include being named a fellow of several professional groups and science academies, including the Production and Operations Management Society, the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences, the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the Royal Society of Canada. His undergraduate alma mater, the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, named him a Distinguished Alumnus in 2008. Two conferences, one in France and one in the U.S., have been organized, and two books have been edited in Dr. Sethi’s honor.

Besides Dr. Sethi, the charter class of SIAM honorees includes School of Management Distinguished Research Professor Alain Bensoussan, director of the school’s International Center for Decision and Risk Analysis.
