UT Dallas Steps Up to Take Annual Health Challenge

In an effort to promote better health among students, faculty and staff, University President David Daniel and Senior Vice President for Business Affairs Calvin D. Jamison will help kick off the Live Healthy North Texas 100-day Challenge by leading a walk across campus Thursday, Jan. 20.
“We all should be proactive in improving our overall health and well-being. The Wellness Program and 100-day Challenge serve as catalysts for the promotion of healthy lifestyles while enhancing the productivity of our employees,” Dr. Jamison said.
Live Healthy North Texas is a team-based weight-loss and physical activity program that directs participants toward a healthier lifestyle.
This year’s campaign launches 11:30 a.m. Thursday in the south lobby of the Student Services Building, where participants will walk the stairs of the building, wind through the Student Union’s Dining Center and end the walk at Human Resources in the Multipurpose Building. The 100-day health challenge runs through April 29.
The Campus Wellness Committee, a co-sponsor of the event, will distribute donations from Chartwells food service, goodie bags and hand sanitizers during and immediately after the walk.
In 2007, the UT System established a program for worksite health and wellness to encourage employees to reach their potential and maintain the productivity needed to meet the challenges of work and life.
The Wellness Program at UT Dallas consists of health education, screening, and interventions designed to change behaviors in order to achieve better health.
Live Healthy North Texas is an outgrowth of Live Healthy America.
Participants are encouraged to send photos and/or short stories about team successes and struggles to [email protected] for use in follow-up communications during the challenge.
University President David Daniel, Assistant Director of Employee Services and Wellness Committee member Vivian Rutledge and Senior Vice President for Business Affairs Calvin Jamison will resume their roles as co-leaders of this year’s 100-day Challenge Health Walk.
Participating in the Challenge
Form a team of two to 10 people, choose a team name and a team captain and then register online. Registrations are accepted after the Jan. 20 start date as well. The cost is $20 per person.
Participants will receive:
- A Live Healthy Training T-shirt.
- A one-year subscription to one of several lifestyle magazines.
- Access to personalized meal plans, customized workouts, music play list downloads, video exercise demonstrations, community discussion board, calorie charts.
- Weekly emails containing tips about nutrition, fitness and healthy living.
- Chances to win monthly prizes and incentives.
- A leader board where participants can see where they rank among their peers at UT Dallas and throughout America.
