Projects to Add Parking Capacity
The Phase I parking garage is expected to be in service in Fall 2013. The Phase II and Phase III facilities are scheduled for completion in 2014 and 2015 respectively.
Responding to continued enrollment growth, The University of Texas System Board of Regents approved design and development plans for a third parking structure May 3.
Plans for a third parking garage by 2015 on the north end of the UT Dallas campus near the Natural Science and Engineering Research Lab were approved in response to the needs raised by the 27 percent growth in the student body in the past four years. The structure is in addition to two approved at the regents’ November meeting as part of the UT System’s Capital Improvement Program.
In all, these garages will add 2,250 spaces at UT Dallas over the next three years.
“Our goal is to provide as much quality, close-in parking as possible,” University President David E. Daniel said. “This parking garage will provide a great benefit to our students, and we’re grateful to the Board of Regents for their support.”
The first parking garage, to be completed by fall 2013, will be on the south end of campus. It will provide 750 spaces to help accommodate traffic expected with the completion of the Arts and Technology (ATEC) building’s 1,200-seat lecture hall, as well as a 110,000-square-foot expansion to the Naveen Jindal School of Management.
The five-story, $11.4-million structure will adjoin the Satellite Utility Plant (SUP) on its eastern side and fill the open space westward to the corner of Drive A and Drive G. It will principally serve the Jindal School and ATEC building, said Richard M. Dempsey, associate vice president for facilities management.
An architectural rendering shows the garage (Phase I in the map) that will be built on the southeast part of campus between the new ATEC building and the Satellite Utility Plant.
Initial design plans for the 251,000-square-foot south parking garage call for a concrete façade with shading devices that match those on the SUP. The structure will include accessible parking spaces. Operational details, including hours and cost of use, will be determined in the coming months.
“The construction of the first parking garage on this part of campus is the next natural progression,” said Dr. Calvin Jamison, vice president for administration. “Parking facilities that are in the planning stages are consistent with the University’s overall master plan.”
The second parking garage will be built in conjunction with a fourth residence hall in 2014, and a third parking structure will anchor the north end of campus, near the Natural Science and Engineering Research Laboratory (NSERL), in 2015.
Since 2009, the University has added 1,135 parking spaces. An additional 1,100 spaces are expected to be completed this fall, with 700 in Lot U and 400 at the NSERL, Jamison said.
