Awards Honor Staffers Who Go the Extra Mile for the University

Staffers who are behind-the-scenes experts on everything from maintenance projects to the admissions process were recognized in the Fall 2012 CARE Awards.
The semi-annual awards, created in 1999 by the Staff Council, were presented at a Nov. 28 ceremony. The CARE Awards, which stand for Celebrate Achievement – Reward Excellence, honor employees who deserve special recognition for superior performance, outstanding customer service, and enhancing the image of the University.
Fellow staff members, faculty members, visitors and even customers of the University nominate them. Awardees receive a desk clock and a framed certificate.
Following are the Fall 2012 recipients and comments from their colleagues who nominated them.
Chris Cody (right), facility supervisor for the Activity Center, was nominated for going “above and beyond his core responsibilities” in overseeing events at the center – including graduation and career fairs – even coming in on weekends to help with setup and breakdown to maximum use of the gym. “Everyone who works with Chris enjoys their interaction with him,” is nomination form read. He attended the event with Tricia Losavio, director of recreational sports.
Connie Imhof, admissions coordinator for the Naveen Jindal School of Management’s Executive MBA program, was praised by colleagues for putting the interests of prospective students at the forefront even as she maintains a “flawless” administrative process. “She is pleasant, kind-hearted and engaging, and is quick to offer a smile. She is an inspiration to all.”
Jay Jascott, landscaping supervisor for Facilities Management, was praised as a dedicated and loyal employee who is instrumental in campus beautification projects. “Even during the most trying and frustrating times, Jay always has a smile and some uplifting words to motivate others,” his nomination read. “His positive attitude is admired by others.”
Jayar Medlock (left), who is event coordinator for the School of Arts and Humanities, has taken the initiative to streamline the administrative process and ensure a satisfying experience for participants in the Texas Guitar Competition/Festival. “Jayar has worked well beyond the established parameters of his role,” his nomination read. Medlock was joined at the CARE Awards by Kristi Barrus, a director in Arts and Humanities.
Debbie Sauer, administrative services officer for Facilities Management, has become known across campus as the“go-to” person in the department, according to her nomination. “Debbie’s consistency with response time and the attention to detail and quality has greatly contributed to the efficiency of a very busy department.”
Reena Schellenberg (right), manager of events and communications for Academic Affairs and the Provost, was complimented by colleagues as “friendly, composed, polite and professional” in handling behind-the-scenes details for McDermott Scholars’ events. “She always seems to have a smile on her face and she goes out of her way to make sure others’ lives are easier,” her nomination said.
