Dustin Gadberry

Dustin Gadberry BS'07

Dustin Gadberry BS’07 and Archie D. Nettles Jr. BS’11 were recently named to the Dallas Business Journal’s “40 Under 40” list for their professional achievements and contributions to the community. The two UT Dallas graduates were chosen from more than 500 nominees who excel in their fields.

After high school, Nettles began an eight-year career in the Army, eventually becoming a sergeant, serving in Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan and joining the reserves. Afterward, Nettles came to UT Dallas to study public affairs. After graduation, he realized that he wanted more than an education from the University. Nettles also desired a career at UT Dallas.

In 2013, he joined the University as an admission counselor. Nettles recruited students from 10 schools within area community college districts, increasing the number of students who chose to attend UT Dallas. Soon afterward, Nettles was promoted to veteran liaison in the Veteran Services Center. In his new role, he advises student veterans and connects them to campus and community resources. To deepen his knowledge of these issues, Nettles plans to begin a master’s degree in political science – legislative studies this fall.

“All of my past experiences have prepared me for where I am today,” he said. “I am fortunate to be in a position to use my past experiences in my career and in my community to serve others.”

Nettles has been a member of the Urban League of Greater Dallas Young Professionals for eight years, serving as co-chair of the group’s annual STEAM youth conference for the last two years. He is also a member of the 2014-2015 Mayor’s Star Council.

Like his fellow honoree, Gadberry has also distinguished himself in his field and the community. Almost 15 years ago as a UT Dallas student, he started Gadberry Construction Co., which now has offices in Dallas and Houston. His projects have spanned municipal buildings, state facilities, nightclubs, restaurants, retail spaces and, most recently, a hike-and-bike trail for the City of Houston.

“UTD was an integral part of my professional foundation that allowed me the opportunity to start one of the fastest-growing construction companies in America,” said Gadberry, who graduated cum laude, completing his bachelor’s degree in business administration from the Naveen Jindal School of Management. “I do not think it would have been possible to get such a high quality education anywhere else while working an 80-hour workweek and growing my company.”

Gadberry graduated from the U.S. Small Business Associations Emerging Leaders Initiative in 2013, and later the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses initiative, a program to help entrepreneurs create jobs and economic opportunity.

Even while running his company, Gadberry devotes time to improving the community. He currently serves as a landmark commissioner for the City of Dallas, helping to make decisions regarding the city’s historic districts. Gadberry is also a member of the North Texas Small Business Development Center Advisory Board.

Honorees will be recognized on May 28. For information on tickets, visit this website.
