RICHARDSON, Texas (Oct. 1, 2002) - The University of Texas at Dallas (UTD), a school known for its academic excellence and research expertise in such areas as nanoscience, brain health, space sciences, telecommunications and sickle cell disease, among others, has hired a new associate vice president for budget.

        Mitzi Money, former associate vice president for financial management at Texas A&M University-Commerce, joined U.T. Dallas on Sept. 25, replacing Cheryl O'Steen, who is retiring after 22 years with UTD and a total of 31 years in higher education.

        Money's responsibilities will include planning, developing and implementing procedures for the university's annual operating budget, including budget control and financial reporting to such entities as the University of Texas System, the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, state auditors and comptrollers and the governor's office.

        "We searched long and hard to find someone with the drive and experience to continue the excellent leadership of the university's budget office," said Robert Lovitt, senior vice president for business affairs at UTD. "I am confident Mitzi will utilize both her work in higher education and her knowledge of accounting procedures to take UTD's financial management to the next level."

        Money said she looked forward to taking on the responsibilities of her new position at UTD. "I enjoy the challenges involved in providing financial leadership for a Texas institution of higher education, including paying proper attention to both the politics and statutes that come into play," she said. "I look forward to helping the management team here protect the economic well-being of the university."

        Money recently was awarded the Rising Star Award, which recognizes professionals who demonstrate potential to succeed as business officers in higher education, from the National Association of College and University Business Officers. She served Texas A&M University-Commerce, formerly East Texas State University, in various accounting and administrative positions for more than 25 years and holds a B.S. degree in accounting from the University of Illinois.
