Company Donates Night-Vision Goggles For Student Learning

Leading aerospace defense contractor L-3 Communications has donated a large collection of night-vision goggles to UT Dallas’ School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. The gift-in-kind, valued at nearly $700,000, was made through L-3 Infrared Products, the Dallas-area division of the company, based in Garland.

Former President Issues Alumni Gift Challenge

UT Dallas President Emeritus Robert Rutford has put forth a generous challenge to UT Dallas alumni who graduated during his tenure, from 1982 to 1994. Dr. Rutford is offering $50,000 in matching funds to those specific graduates, who make new gifts to the University by Dec. 31, 2012. If the $50,000 goal is met, he will give up to $50,000 more in matching funds.

Gift to Help Chronicle History of Key Firm in U.S. Aviation History

A recent $100,000 gift from the Vought Aircraft Heritage Foundation will make it possible for curators at Eugene McDermott Library to sort through the foundation’s archives and make this trove of aviation history available to the public. The gift provides for an archivist to integrate Vought Aircraft’s historical documents, pictures and films with the library’s History of Aviation Collection. The project is expected to take two years.

Profs at golf tournamentUT Dallas’ 19th Annual Scholarship Golf Tournament more than doubled funds raised last year, with players and donors contributing $74,000 to benefit UT Dallas students. Money raised from the April 19 tournament at the Sherrill Park Golf Course in Richardson adds to an endowment that benefits the Betty and Gifford Johnson Graduate Scholarship and the Patti Henry-Pinch Undergraduate Scholarship. Campus Tree Plantings to Highlight Earth Week Events

UT Dallas Earth Week 2011The Office of Student Volunteerism is hosting a campuswide initiative to make UT Dallas greener and more sustainable.  Earth Week, which lasts from from April 16 to 22, includes the planting of 20 trees near the Visitor Center. Turner Construction Company is donating the new trees with the help of the Texas Trees Foundation. Matches Bolster Gifts’ Impact

Friday’s record alumni gifts to The University of Texas at Dallas received  sizable boosts from two programs programs designed to increase research productivity and spur growth at Texas universities. Standing ovations, confetti cannons and countdowns to two big reveals were part of Friday’s announcement of the naming the School of Management and its honors program in recognition of the two largest alumni gifts in UT Dallas history. A crowd of 500—including students, faculty, staff, alumni, a UT System Regent, federal and local government officials—assembled about 10 a.m. at a balloon-festooned stage just outside the school, at The Circle at the end of University Parkway. Callier Center, UT DallasUT Dallas hosted a special birthday party this week for two little boys who used their own birthday bash to raise money for speech-language services at the Callier Center for Communication Disorders. Grant Robbins, 8, and Garrett, 6, asked their friends to make donations to Callier, in lieu of gifts, at the pool party they enjoyed back in August. Grant and Garrett, along with little brother Gavin, 2, have worked with Callier speech language pathologists for several years. read more

$55 Million: One of Many New Fundraising Records

President David E. DanielDonors to UT Dallas shattered records in nearly every measure used to gauge private support for the just-ended fiscal year. More than $55 million in total gifts and pledges were received, eclipsing the previous year’s $40.6 million total, the largest total to date at that time. “We’re very grateful to our donors who have enabled the University to move forward on so many fronts,” said President David E. The UT Dallas School of Management’s top-ranked internal audit program kicks off a campaign Friday to sustain the program’s mission of preparing a steady stream of graduates to meet industry demand. Charles WylyThe University community is saddened by the death of Charles Wyly, whose support played a central role in establishing the UT Dallas Center for BrainHealth neuroscience research institute. Wyly, the legendary Dallas entrepreneur and investor, died Sunday after a traffic accident near Aspen, Colo., where he and his wife, Dee, owned a home. “We were very saddened to hear the news of Charles’ passing,” said UT Dallas President David E. Daniel. “Charles and Dee Wyly have been good friends of UT Dallas, sharing both their time and their resources. He will be deeply missed.” read more

Nancy HamonThe University of Texas at Dallas lost a friend and a supporter of arts scholarship when Dallas philanthropist and civic leader Nancy B. Hamon died Saturday at age 92. Development Board Member Dan Petty Dies at 71

Dan PettyDan Petty, a well-known civic and business leader in North Texas and a major supporter of UT Dallas, died on Tuesday of complications from surgery. Petty, 71, was a member of the UT Dallas Development Board, the Advisory Council for the School of Economic, Political and Policy Sciences and the Institute for Public Affairs Advisory Committee. He was president of the North Texas Commission for many years and was a leading member of the committee that brought next month’s Super Bowl to the Metroplex. read more
