Frequently Asked QuestionsIs Orientation mandatory?Orientation is strongly recommended by the University. It will provide you with vital information and details that will be beneficial to you as a student at UTD. Undergraduate students will meet with an academic adviser and register for classes during Orientation. What should I do if I am unable to attend Orientation?If you are a freshman student, appointments with advisers will occur after the last listed Orientation date for your first semester at UTD; therefore, it is to your advantage to attend Orientation. Attending Orientation will allow you the opportunity to meet with an adviser and register for classes earlier than if you meet with an adviser "on your own." Contact New Student Programs at 972-883-6171 for help. If you are a graduate student, contact the program office for your degree to schedule an appointment with an academic adviser. Where can I find information about International Student Orientation?International Student Orientation is offered by the International Student Services office. Visit their website, call or email them for more information. International students are required to attend International Student Orientation. You can reach them by phone at (972) 883-4189. When is Orientation, and how much does it cost?New Student Programs offers orientations for: freshmen, family, transfer and graduate students. Freshman Orientation costs $100. Family Orientation costs $10 per family member. Transfer Students Orientation costs $25. Graduate Student Orientation is free. Scholarships do not cover the cost of any orientations. What do I need to bring to Orientation?Because you will be able to register for your classes at orientation, you should bring any test scores and transcripts with you, if possible. Students who have taken the Computer Science Placement exam should bring their score printout with them as well. When are Comet Camp, UTD Success Camp, and Emerging Leader Program?Check out the Program pages for specific details on these programs. When can I meet with an adviser?Undergraduate students will have the opportunity to meet with an adviser and register during Orientation. Freshman students must attend orientation in order to meet with an adviser. Transfer students may call their program office or the Office of Undergraduate Studies to schedule an appointment with their academic adviser. (Undergraduate Academic Advisers) Graduate students should schedule an appointment to meet with an adviser by calling their program office prior to registration. Graduate programs are listed on the Graduate Dean's page. What about on-campus housing?Students can experience apartment-style living in the on-campus housing provided by Waterview Park Apartments. Freshmen should contact the Residential Life office at 972-883-6391. All other students should contact Waterview Park at 972-454-5000 for rates and availability. How can I apply for Financial Aid?Contact the Financial Aid Office at 972-883-2941 for details regarding financial aid, short-term loans, and the installment payment plan. How can I apply for a UTD scholarship?If you have questions about scholarships please contact the Office of Undergraduate Studies at 972-883-6805. Where can I stay during Orientation?Freshmen and Family orientations last 2 days. UTD does not have on campus housing facilities for orientations. There are several hotels near the University for overnight accommodations and shuttle service. Be sure to ask for the UTD discount rate when making your reservation.
