School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics

Message from the Dean

Welcome

Welcome to the School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. We are a growing organization, focused on providing an excellent education in over 40 degree programs within our six departments. Our faculty and students are engaged in forefront, cross-disciplinary research in state-of-the-art research facilities.

New opportunities to enhance our research and teaching capabilities will be provided by the planned construction of a Mathematics/Science/Engineering Teaching-Learning Center. This building will house up-to-date instructional facilities for introductory courses in biology, chemistry, geosciences, mathematics, and physics, while serving as a venue for research in science and mathematics learning.

“I was attracted to UT Dallas by its drive to become a major public research university and, in particular, by NS&M’s pivotal role in achieving that goal. My aim is to make the school a model for 21st Century academic research and education.  It will draw strength from traditional disciplines, but will attack scientific and technological problems and the training of young scientists from an integrated, cross-disciplinary perspective.”

Educating future educators is one of our School’s major focuses. Our students can, while pursuing degrees in mathematics and science disciplines, obtain teaching certificates within their usual four-year program.  Our location enhances our ability to partner with local school districts, offering a “hands-on” opportunity to further our students’ learning. The Department of Science/Mathematics Education, which is housed in the School, offers advanced degree programs for in-service teachers, and conducts research on mathematics and science education at all levels, both formal and informal.  Many graduate students and postdoctoral researchers in our departments will similarly take their places as faculty members at institutions of higher education.

The School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics is built on a foundation that joins public and private sectors. Students reap benefits well beyond our four walls, through internships and research experiences.  Our commitment to excellence will ensure that the North Texas region continues to grow as a science, mathematics, and educational destination, as a source of scientific talent, and as an incubator of new technologies.

Come join us,

Dr. Myron B. Salamon
