Academic Career Series

Workshops in the Academic Career Series introduce graduate students and postdoctoral scholars to the parts of academic job applications. These workshops are intended for individuals who intend to enter the job market to become a professor in the near future.

Are you considering a career as a professor? If so, you will need to become familiar with the cycle and process of the academic job market. This workshop will introduce participants to the academic hiring cycle, the parts of an academic job application, and strategies for targeting the appropriate jobs and tailoring your materials.

A good letter of recommendation reveals important qualities that lie beneath the surface of a transcript or a resume. This presentation will discuss how to cultivate positive relationships with potential recommenders, how to choose your recommenders strategically, how to ask a mentor to write a letter for you, and how to manage your letters using a dossier service such as Interfolio.

In this workshop, you will learn strategies for writing about your short- and long-term research plans in a compelling way for audiences such as hiring committees and grant review committees. You will walk away with concrete tips and writing prompts that will help make your research statement or research proposal stand out.
