Career Planning Series

Workshops in the Career Planning Series introduce graduate students and postdoctoral scholars to the fundamental processes involved in finding a career at any stage and in any industry.

Are you a new graduate student at UT Dallas? Do you want to maximize your time in graduate school to position yourself for an awesome career when you finish? This presentation will share strategies for how you can make choices NOW that will impact your job search when you graduate. We will cover topics such as finding and interacting with mentors, intentionally planning to reach your career goals, researching careers and employers, and building a graduate school experience that is meaningful for YOU.

As part of developing your professional goals, you need a critical understanding of your interests, skills, values, and experiences. Self-assessment is the best way to learn this information, but how do you do a self-assessment, and, once it is done, what do you do? This workshop will present the different types of assessments, walk participants through a self-reflexive assessment activity, and discuss the results and implications of your self-assessment.

As a job candidate with an advanced degree, you should learn as much as you can about your future industry. In order to advocate for yourself effectively on the job market, you will need to learn about and communicate with potential employers before you start applying. How do you develop an accurate and nuanced profile of a company/organization’s purpose, culture, and needs? What kinds of communication are appropriate at this stage of your job search? In this workshop, you will learn how to research potential employers of various types and communicate with individuals on the inside.

Whether you are interested in meeting new people who share your research interests or looking to land your next job, a strong LinkedIn account is indispensable. Join the Office of Graduate Education for Part II of the workshop series Social Media Literacy for Graduate Students. In this workshop, you will learn the purpose and value of LinkedIn, ways to use LinkedIn to strengthen your professional network, and idiosyncrasies of LinkedIn in the graduate student context. Participants are asked to bring a laptop or tablet in order to view and make changes to their own LinkedIn profiles.

    How to Tailor Your Resume

    • Location: FA 2.206 (Ground floor of the Founders West Annex)

One of the most important things you can do to become an excellent job candidate is to compose a resume and cover letter that speak specifically to the demands of a job posting. This hands-on workshop will give you practice at analyzing job descriptions carefully so that you can tailor your resume and cover letter so that it will speak to what an employer is looking for. Participants are invited to bring a job description that interests them and a draft of their resume in order to apply what they learn to their own job search.
