Scholarship Information
Studying abroad does not have to be prohibitively expensive; however, students should begin assessing their financial situation early in preparation for studying abroad. Many of the third-party programs offer scholarships. Additionally, the Office of the Provost, Office of International Education (OIE), and Financial Aid work to promote sustainable ways for UTD students to have a more affordable experience.

International Education Fund Scholarship Form
International Education Fund Scholarship - IEFS Conditions
1. Students should be aware of the Office of the Provost by-laws for the International Education Scholarship (IEFS) as they will affect the awarding.
2. International Education Fund Scholarship (IEFS) awards are based primarily on length of the program, diversity, academic merit (GPA), expenses for study abroad, financial need, narrative, and two letters of recommendation.
3. Letters of recommendation will only be accepted from UTD faculty and/or advisors.
4. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered.
5. Undergraduate lower division students applying for IEFS must have successfully completed a minimum of 30 semester credit hours at UTD (residential hours) for long - term programs, i.e. study abroad, independent study, exchange mobility, internship, and research. Undergraduate upper division students applying for IEFS must have successfully completed a minimum of 15 semester credit hours at UTD (residential hours) for long - term programs, i.e. study abroad, independent study, exchange mobility, internship, and research. Students applying for the IEFS must have successfully completed a minimum of 12 semester credit hours at UTD (residential hours) for short term programs i.e. faculty led programs (customized programs that imply one or two weeks of foreign travel) at the moment of pursuing the program.
6. Graduate students applying for IEFS must have successfully completed a minimum of 9 semester credit hours at UTD.
7. When there is any mention of financial need in the Cost Addendum Form, the Office of the Provost requires that a “FAFSA” form be submitted.
8. Decisions of the Office of the Provost are final. They are not subject to appeal. Office of the Provost should not be contacted by students who want to know why they did not get an award.
9. IEFS scholarship is limited for a maximum support of two semesters abroad.
10. If students are awarded the IEFS scholarship to be disbursed over two semesters, the award will be divided over the two semesters.
11. Office of the Provost and Office of International Education will have computer accounts set up that will enable them to view Scholarship Applications on line. This will involve encryption software, and any other measure to ensure the security of student information (FERPA).
12. IEFS scholarship applications require new documentation including letters of recommendation with each application. It is not sufficient to refer to dated material of the previous years or materials not submitted with the application that may be on file somewhere in the university.
13. International Education Fund Scholarships (IEFS) awarded to go to a stated location cannot be transferred to a different location. If the student does not go to the stated location the award will be forfeited.
14. IEFS scholarships are dependent upon the availability of funds.
15. If a student receives money for one IEFS trip, the Office of the Provost will not consider them a high priority if they apply for a second program. In effect, this means that the Office of the Provost would not normally disburse money to someone for a second program. Also, students who have been awarded other scholarships which provide money for travel will not be considered high priority.
16. Students who apply for the IEFS must use the UTD IEFS application. This includes a financial statement of resources needed to travel abroad and a narrative listing specific educational objectives and how the courses or program pursued abroad will transfer back to UTD for use in the applicant's degree program. The application form makes it clear that the purpose of the IEFS Scholarship is to supplement student expenses, NOT to cover the cost of most or all of the trip.
17. The Office of the Provost will not award IEFS Scholarships to students who have not gone through the International Education Office to complete institutional protocol, including "Pre Approval Course Form" or "Out of State, Foreign and Field Trip Course Approval Form." These forms are to help ensure that students have a safe and worthwhile travel experience.
18. When a student is awarded an IEFS Scholarship but does not go, the university will keep the designated funds in the IEFS general account to award to other applicants in subsequent semesters. Concurrently, the Office of the Provost will also designate that this student has received an award and is therefore the lowest priority for future IEFS awards. (There are always exceptions of course such as if the class does not make or if an institution cancels a class.) If the reason is personal, however, such as not having enough money saved, the student is not behaving responsibly. |
