Innovation & Technology Summit

Image of IT SummitWednesday, May 18, 2016 the Office of Information Technology will host our first ever Innovation & Technology Summit.

The summit will bring together the innovators and consumers of information technology with a focus on research, teaching, learning, and tech support, and foster an environment of innovation, collaboration, and partnerships. Additionally, we hope every participant will leave inspired with action items and ideas to apply both personally and professionally.

The conference includes keynote speakers from Dell and GameStop, a panel discussion, 18 breakout sessions covering everything from IoT to research computing, coffee, lunch, a networking happy hour, and an information fair.

The Office of Sustainability will be collecting used ink and toner cartridges at the Summit. These recyclables are sold to a third-party vendor and all funds collected are used to benefit the Staff Council Scholarship Fund.

Platinum sponsors are Netsync, Cisco, Dell, and EST Group, gold sponsor is Oracle, and silver sponsors are Taurus Technologies, HiED Tech Store, UTD Tech Store, and Blackboard.

Changes in Office 365 Clutter Feature

The Office of Information Technology has received several inquiries over the past few weeks regarding a feature of Student email called Clutter. This feature was added to the Office 365 product in 2014 and was enabled by default for all UT Dallas student email accounts in August 2015 by Microsoft. The feature is designed to help keep your inbox tidy by moving mail you don’t read to a sub folder in your account called clutter. Weekly summaries of the actions taken by the feature are emailed to you so you can keep an eye on its activity. Based on the feedback we have received regarding official UT Dallas email and other important email being directed to this folder OIT disabled the feature for all accounts and made that the default state for new accounts. If you have a clutter folder in your mailbox and have not reviewed it for important email messages, please do so. If this is a feature you found useful you can re-enable it by following the instructions below. OIT Installing Office 2016 began April 1

Images of Dell ProductsThe Office of Information Technology has begun installing Office 2016 on all new computer builds as of April 1, 2016.

Programs inside Office 2016 will continue to be forward and backward compatible with files created in other versions of these programs. In Office 2016, you will be able to open and modify documents, spreadsheets, and presentations you created in older versions of Office, and files you create with Office 2016 can be opened and modified by others with older versions of Office.

Office 2016 adds a “Tell Me” tool to Word, Excel and others that allows users to quickly search for functions instead of navigating Office’s labyrinth of menus, makes improvements to Outlook that prioritizes important emails, and deeply incorporates Skype, the internet chat and video call service. Office 2016 has added many great tools to Excel such as “Get and Transform”, which allows you to import and transform data easier. They have also added six new chart types and 3D maps.

Be sure to look out for Microsoft Office 2016 on your new OIT supported computers.



Desktop Support Team Moves to Campus

Having desktop Outlook issues? Need help setting up a printer or a new desktop? The Office of Information Technology (OIT) Desktop Support Team is moving on-campus to better assist you! Director Don Davis, has been leading the initiative to optimize the performance of OIT's Desktop Support team and says “The move of Desktop Support back to campus is very exciting. It allows us to be closer to the customers that we support every day here at UTD.”

With the leadership of Bryan Kinnamon and some highly trained techs, the Desktop Support team has moved to the 1st floor of the Administration Building to improve service for their customers, which is over one third of UTD staff and administrators. Once the move is final, OIT hopes to see reduced wait times, increased overall satisfaction, and more efficiency and collaboration across campus - all while maintaining the high quality service OIT Desktop Support is known for. Other very useful Desktop Tech services include quotes on equipment and accessories for departments.

Casey Foulds, PMP Enterprise Project Manager Joins the OIT Team

Image of Casey FouldsCasey received a B.S. from Texas Woman’s University (TWU) in Government. She worked for TWU from 1997 to 2013 serving as an Instructional Operations Systems Administrator. For over 15 years she guided project management in instructional technology by planning, designing, installing, maintaining, and training staff and faculty end users on classroom technology systems and audio visual tools to enhance learning across three campuses.

Casey left the university to pursue an endeavor with AMX by Harman from 2013 to 2015 as an Education Relationship Manager. There she developed relationships with higher education end users worldwide and helped plan, implement, and foster academic technology plans with university and college stakeholders. She attends conferences, trainings, lectures and tradeshows to bring innovative technologies and project methodologies to the university arenas. Her dedication to research and development in technology planning for university business and the learning environment helps form a foundation to bring people and projects together to reach common goals.
