A Message From Your President

Rejoice! Bavoso the Mad and his band of miscreants have been overthrown! I assure you that the last administration’s tireless enthusiasm and devotion to the fluid operation and fun of Geoclub will not go unpunished. They wreaked upon us some pretty unforgettable experiences upon which we will surely reminisce throughout life. Yes, that reign of tyranny is over. Now starts a whole new reign of tyranny!

It is an honor to see that my friends and classmates have the confidence in me to continue the duties of our brilliant presidents past. Over the last four years, I watched Geoclub connect students with each other, faculty, and professionals in a way that no other forum could. Geoclub fills an essential niche that greatly enhances prospects for burgeoning Geoscientists of all disciplines. Ever since I attended my first Geoclub meeting and listened to then-President Amanda go on about god-knows-what (I was more focused on scarfing free pizza), I felt the camaraderie and potential advantage of being a part of this organization. We are made up of the smartest, most unique, gneissest, and sometimes wildest bunch of young students on campus.

I am excited to be your new president because I have goals for Geoclub. I would like to see our numbers continue to increase as they have been in preceding generations by continuing to involve our geosciences underclassmen. The UTD Department of Geosciences is a warm and stimulating environment made cohesive by students in all classes from Physical Geology to Field Camp to Dissertation. This sense of belonging remains into your professional careers. Alumni are important members of Geoclub. Once a Geoclubber, always a Geoclubber! I believe that every Geoscientist knows each other by only a few degrees of separation. That is why I would also like to see intra-club involvement with our sister geosciences student organizations at other universities around us.

Sarah, Hannah, and I cannot do this alone. This is Your Geoclub, and whatever ya’ll want to do, we’ll do it. Be sure to come to us with your ideas so that we can discuss how to make Geoclub what you want it to be. I want it to be comfortable and rewarding to all those involved. Geoclub needs your help to continue to make it so.

I will end by again expressing my gratitude to everyone for allowing me this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to administrate one of the most important institutions of your undergraduate education. Geoclub forever!

GeoClub Wins First Softball Game!

GeoClub played and won its first softball game 11-4 on Tuesday night (March 31st). The Vietnamese Student Alliance had no answer to GeoClub's offensive assault. Scoring six runs in the top of the first inning, GeoClub hit the ground running. Behind the solid pitching of Dan Carlin, and key hits from Jesse Howard (1-2), Lorna Hanko (2-3), Steven Miller (2-2), and Sarah Dunn (2-3), GeoClub had little to worry about. Sevon Geil (1-3) drove Sarah Dunn in for the winning run as the mercy rule came into effect.

GeoClub's second game of the season is Tuesday, April 7th at 10:00pm on the UT Dallas softball fields just south of the Activity Center. Come out and cheer on GeoClub as they take on another undefeated team, the Relics.

Volunteers needed! Yes, you! No, don't close the window!

On Saturday, October 6, 2007, APO is having their annual Math and Science Camp.

Math and Science Camp is for "underprivileged elementary students, grades 3rd through 6th, who might be struggling in their studies. This one-day camp features fun and educational workshops that help spark the children's interest in learning."

And guess what? We get to teach them how hard geology minerals rocks! There will be two classes: a rocks and minerals class, and a geologic disaster class. Plans are starting to come together, but we NEED VOLUNTEERS to help out!

Please contact Alex if you're interested in helping underprivileged kids learn about geology. You can e-mail him or stand and wait in the hall outside the geosciences department--he'll be by eventually.

Hey you! In the Remote Sensing Lab!

Have you had your picture taken for the posters yet?

No? Stop what you're doing and get it done. Right now. It's easy. Just go walk down the hall and into the department office and say, "Hey, can someone take my picture?"

You can also e-mail me a picture of yourself. Don't let yourself become a pair of crossed rock hammers!

Photo not available... :(
