Moving from the Desktop to the Cyberdesk: the Integration of Office 97 and the Internet

Presenter: H. Albert Napier, Ph.D., Rice University

Office 97 moves individuals from a desktop emphasis to a cyberdesk orientation. In Office 97, individuals can create hyperlinks between documents in one application or to documents in other applications. Furthermore, you can use the applications to place pages on the World Wide Web. These new capabilities further enhance the document integration of the various applications. Most of the session includes hands-on exercises illustrating some of the new features included in Office 97 and the transition from a traditional desktop to cyberdesk orientation. The remaining segment of the session addresses teaching the Internet on-line and off-line.

A sample of the capabilities illustrated include: creating and publishing Web pages, searching the WWW while using a desktop application, building hyperlinks between documents in various applications, animation in presentations and documents, sending e-mail, and integrating documents across applications. Hands-on--Everyone will have a computer.

Advisory Committees: - It’s importance in development of curriculum and partnerships

The Computer Information System Advisory Committee members of San Antonio College will provide the participants with an insight about how a strong and vibrant advisory committee can assist in curriculum development, equipment purchasing, donations,forming partnerships, etc.

In today’s shrinking dollars from the state, it is important that schools and colleges form partnership to stay abreast of the changing technology and to have a vibrant faculty so that we prepare our students for the changing workforce demands. This session will offer adequate information about the importance of the advisory committee and its role in building a strong program
