UTD -History Association of Professional Women at UTD

History and Organizational Structure of the APW at UTD

In the late 1970s, a group of faculty women organized the Women's Faculty Association in order to establish a forum for the discussion of women's issues and to stimulate development of a campus environment sensitive to the concerns of female faculty. The late Dr. Carolyn L. Galerstein, then Dean of the School of General Studies, was instrumental in the organization's foundation and became its first president. In 1992, the Women's Faculty Association responded to concerns of women faculty and professional staff about such issues as sexual harassment, a low success rate in the hiring and retention of women, and lack of an articulated Affirmative Action program by enlarging its membership and changing its name to the Association of Professional Women at UT-Dallas. Since then, the APW has worked actively to promote action on these issues and UT-Dallas has now implemented a policy against sexual harassment. Most recently, the association has been instrumental in the laying the foundations for the new Carolyn Lipshy Galerstein Women's Center at UT-Dallas.
