Louise Raggio

Pioneer of Women's Legal Rights

Pioneer of women's legal rights Louise Raggio will speak at UTD this month on the topic of women and the legal system. Louise Raggio graduated from SMU Law School in 1952 in a time when married women could not sign their names without there husband's permission, and could not serve on a jury in Texas. Raggio has taken on the challenge of equal rights for women throughout her long and distinguished career. She has amassed an impressive list of accomplishments culminating in her pivotal role in the historic re-writing of the Texas marital property rights bill in 1967 and in the creation of the Texas Family Code. Recently featured in the Houston Chronicle (March 31, 1996) as a women to whom we all owe "a debt of thanks", Louise Raggio has been a first hand witness and participant in the changes in women's rights of our time. At the age of 76, still actively practicing law, she is a keen inside source on the state of women's rights in the present, and has a bird's eye view of the future. Join us for this celebration of women, to learn about our past, to understand our present, and to plan for our future!
