College Chess Community Engagement - University of Maryland Baltimore County

The following are some of the activities the University of Maryland Baltimore County Chess Club have done for outreach this year:

  • Banneker Chess Day at the Benjamin Banneker Historical Park and Museum
    Baltimore, MD
    March 5, 2005
    UMBC Chess Club members WIM Battsetseg Tsagaan, Jim Kinsman and Brian Chang have helped on organizeing a grand tournament with over 90 participants from Baltimore County, Howard County and Baltimore City schools
  • Columbia Festival of the Arts
    Columbia, MD
    June 11-12, 2005
    UMBC Chess Club members WIM Battsetseg Tsagaan and Greg Masters helped in organizing chess events including simultaneous games, casual games, a lecture for beginners, as well as games conducted on a giant chess board.
  • Chess Meetings at Miller's Library (2 hours)
    Ellicott City, MD
    Once a week during the school year (once a month during the summer) WIM Battsetseg Tsagaan organizes a local chess club with her husband, FIDE master, Enkhbat Tegshsuren, for all ages. Kids hear a 20-minute lecture and have a chance to practice with other children.
  • After School Chess Programs
    WIM Battsetseg Tsagaan runs after school chess programs at a number of Howard County Elementary and Middle Schools. The lectures concentrate on developing logic, calculation and critical thinking skills. The programs run for an hour during the school year.
  • Tournaments
    WIM Battsetseg Tsagaan runs local chess scholastic tournaments in Ellicott City.
