CSA is a student
affiliate chapter of the American Chemical Society (ACS). We are involved
in a variety of service and social events, which have helped us to earn
an "Outstanding" award from the ACS, which is given only to
the top 3% of student affiliate chapters. Each year CSA brings exciting
and informative chemistry demonstrations to the community through our
involvement in Sounds of Class, Plano Library System, and the Museum
of Natural Science in Fair Park. In addition, we are involved in events
specifically for younger age groups including APO's Math and Science
Camp and our annual Kids in Chemistry Day, which has received coverage
from local newspapers and television stations.
We also encourage social events for members of CSA and the students
of UTD. Every semester we have a barbeque where students and chemistry
professors are invited for great fun and food. Our biggest event each
semester is no doubt our broomball competition where undergraduates
battle graduate students and faculty. This is a great event to interact
outside of class, but make sure to NOT abuse your chemistry professor
in any way since this event occurs when professors are grading finals!
Our main fundraiser is through selling goggles (required for all UTD
chemistry labs) and general chemistry software. We not only raise money
for our many events throughout the year, but we provide the campus with
a valuable service.
CSA is very involved in attending local, regional, and national meetings
for the ACS. In addition, we bring in speakers to talk during general
meetings about subjects such as Chemistry in various professions or
inspiring children with chemistry. Our members are involved in a variety
of research labs on campus, so if you have a question about research
or general classes, ask our members!
As a group our objective is to culture an interest and appreciation
of science in everyone we come into contact with.
