IDSA at UTD
Topic: “Spiritual Growth and Social Awareness”
Summary: Zakat (alms giving,
charity), fasting in the month of Ramadan, hajj (pilgrimage).
98:5 And
they have been commanded no more than this: To worship Allah, offering Him
sincere devotion, being true (in faith); to establish regular prayer; and to practise regular charity; and that is the Religion Right
and Straight.
9:103 [Hence, O Prophet,]
accept that [part] of their possessions which is offered for the sake of God,
so that thou mayest cleanse them thereby and cause
them to grow in purity, and pray for them: behold, thy prayer will be [a source
of] comfort to them - for God is all-hearing, all-knowing.
2:177 It is not
righteousness that ye turn your faces Towards east or West; but it is
righteousness- to believe in Allah and the Last Day, and the Angels, and the
Book, and the Messengers; to spend of your substance, out of love for Him, for
your kin, for orphans, for the needy, for the wayfarer, for those who ask, and
for the ransom of slaves; to be steadfast in prayer, and practice regular
charity; to fulfil the contracts which ye have made;
and to be firm and patient, in pain (or suffering) and adversity, and
throughout all periods of panic. Such are the people of truth, the Allah fearing.
9:71 The Believers, men and
women, are protectors one of another: they enjoin what is just,
and forbid what is evil: they observe regular prayers, practise
regular charity, and obey Allah and His Messenger. On them will Allah pour His
mercy: for Allah is Exalted in power, Wise.
22:78 And
strive hard in God’s cause with all the striving that is due to Him: it is He
who has elected you [to carry His message], and has laid no hardship on you in
[anything that pertains to religion, [and made you follow] the creed of your
forefather Abraham. It is He who has named you in bygone times as well as in
this [divine writ] – “those who have surrendered themselves to God”, so that
the Apostle might bear witness to the truth before you, and that you might bear
witness to it before all mankind. Thus, be constant in prayer, and render the
purifying dues, and hold fast unto God. He is your Lord Supreme: and how
excellent is this Lord Supreme, and how excellent this Giver of Succour!
30:39 That
which ye lay out for increase through the property of (other) people, will have
no increase with Allah. But that which ye lay out for charity, seeking the
Countenance of Allah, (will increase): it is these who will get a recompense
multiplied.
2:83 And
remember We took a covenant from the Children of Israel (to this
effect): Worship none but Allah. treat with kindness
your parents and kindred, and orphans and those in need; speak fair to the
people; be steadfast in prayer; and practise regular
charity. Then did ye turn back, except a few among you, and ye backslide (even
now).
19:55 He used to enjoin on
his people Prayer and Charity, and he was most
acceptable in the sight of his Lord.
19:31 "And He hath
made me blessed wheresoever I be, and hath enjoined on
me Prayer and Charity as long as I live;
21:73 And We made them
leaders, guiding (men) by Our Command, and We sent
them inspiration to do good deeds, to establish regular prayers, and to practise regular charity; and they constantly served Us
(and Us only).
2:110 And
be steadfast in prayer and regular in charity: And whatever good ye send forth
for your souls before you, ye shall find it with Allah. for Allah sees Well all that ye do.
4:162 But those among them
who are well-grounded in knowledge, and the believers, believe in what hath
been revealed to thee and what was revealed before thee: And (especially) those
who establish regular prayer and practise regular
charity and believe in Allah and in the Last Day: To them shall We soon give a great reward.
7:156 "And ordain for
us that which is good, in this life and in the Hereafter: for we have turned
unto Thee." He said: "With My punishment I visit whom I will; but My mercy extendeth to all things.
That (mercy) I shall ordain for those who do right, and practise
regular charity, and those who believe in Our signs;-
9:60 The offerings given
for the sake of God are [meant] only for the poor and the needy, and those who
are in charge thereof, and those whose hearts are to be won over, and for the
freeing of human beings from bondage, and [for] those who are over burdened
with debts, and [for every struggle] in God's cause, and [for] the wayfarer:
[this is] an ordinance from God - and God is all-knowing, wise.
Umar Bin Khattab (ra) reported that the Messenger of Allah (saas) responded to Jibreel (as)
and said: "... Islam is to testify that there is no deity but Allah and
Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, to perform the prayer, to pay Zakaat, to observe fasting in Ramadan, and to make
pilgrimage to the house of Allah if you are able to do so...." (Bukhari, Muslim)
RAMADAN FASTING
2:183 O ye who believe!
Fasting is prescribed to you as it was prescribed to those before you,
that ye may (learn) self-restraint,-
2:185 Ramadhan
is the (month) in which was sent down the Qur'an, as a guide to mankind, also
clear (Signs) for guidance and judgment (Between right and wrong). So every one
of you who is present (at his home) during that month should spend it in
fasting, but if any one is ill, or on a journey, the prescribed period
(Should be made up) by days later. Allah intends every facility for you; He
does not want to put to difficulties. (He wants you) to complete the prescribed
period, and to glorify Him in that He has guided you; and perchance ye shall be
grateful.
HAJJ (Pilgrimage):
2:196 And
complete the Hajj or 'umra in the service of Allah.
But if ye are prevented (From completing it), send an offering for sacrifice,
such as ye may find, and do not shave your heads until the offering reaches the
place of sacrifice. And if any of you is ill, or has an ailment in his scalp,
(Necessitating shaving), (He should) in compensation either fast, or feed the
poor, or offer sacrifice; and when ye are in peaceful conditions (again), if
any one wishes to continue the 'umra on to the HAJJ,
He must make an offering, such as he can afford, but if he cannot afford it, He
should fast three days during the hajj and seven days on his return, Making ten
days in all. This is for those whose household is not in (the precincts of) the
Sacred Mosque. And fear Allah, and know that Allah is strict in punishment.
2:197 For Hajj are the
months well known. If any one undertakes that duty therein, Let there be no
obscenity, nor wickedness, nor wrangling in the hajj. And whatever good ye do,
(be sure) Allah knoweth it. And take a provision
(With you) for the journey, but the best of provisions is right conduct. So
fear Me, o ye that are wise.
2:158 [Hence,] behold, As-Safa and Al-Marwah are among
the symbols set up by God; and thus, no wrong does he who, having come to the
Temple on pilgrimage or on a pious visit, strides to and fro between these two:
for, if one does more good than he is bound to do-behold, God is responsive to
gratitude, all-knowing.
3:97 In it are Signs Manifest;
(for example), the Station of Abraham; whoever enters it attains security;
Pilgrimage thereto is a duty men owe to Allah,- those who can afford the
journey; but if any deny faith, Allah stands not in need of any of His
creatures.
9:19 Do ye make the giving
of drink to pilgrims, or the maintenance of the Sacred Mosque, equal to (the
pious service of) those who believe in Allah and the Last Day, and strive with
might and main in the cause of Allah. They are not comparable in the sight of
Allah. and Allah guides not those who do wrong.
22:27 "And proclaim
the Pilgrimage among men: they will come to thee on foot and (mounted) on every
kind of camel, lean on account of journeys through deep and distant mountain
highways;
