History of Lacrosse
Lacrosse is the oldest sport played in America and is often referred to as
"America's
only True Sport." History shows that lacrosse was played by the Six
Nations of the
Iroquois throughout New York State and the Lower Ontario before Columbus
landed
in 1492. The settlers startede to pick up the game in 1840 and have played
it in one
form or another since then. These Indians called the game they playeed
Baggataway,
which inferred that the game was that of the creator, Sod Gui-Ya-Di-Sa-A
who
promised the Indians they would always have the game even after death. The
French
settlers saw the game likened the netted stick to the Bishop's croix or
crosse, hence
the name "lacrosse."
