EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES TO SUSTAIN HUMANITY IN THE 21ST CENTURY
Dr. Robert C. Harriss
Professor and Holder of the A.P. and Florence Wiley Chair
Department of Civil Engineering
Texas A&M University
Abstract
The first decade of the 21st century will be a time of revolutionary advances in observations, information, and understanding of how human activities can be sustained in a manner that leads to increased human prosperity, improved environmental stewardship, and a better quality of life. Environmental measurement technologies will provide opportunities to advance skill in weather and climate forecasting, move to high precision methods for managing natural resources, and challenge the problem of creating sustainable cities. University scholars must engage in the task of converting new technologies and understanding into usable design concepts and tools more effectively than in the past. This will require increased emphasis on collaborative problem solving and partnerships with industry and public sector organizations. The structure and implementation of research on issues of sustainability will increasingly move to a regional focus. How can we best meet this challenge in Texas?
Dr. Harriss, prior to his appointment at Texas A&M was Director, Science Division, Office of Mission to Planet Earth, NASA HQ, Washington, DC
