Membership in Sigma Xi is by invitation, and there are two membership categories, Full and Associate. Full members are required to have shown "noteworthy achievement" as an original investigator in a field of pure or applied science, as typically evidenced by publications, patents, written reports, and similar means. Associate members are typically at the outset of their careers, and are required to have demonstrated an "aptitude for research which is expected in due course to lead to the fulfillment of the requirements for full membership."
