Colloquia

Physics Colloquia at UTD are regarded as an integral part of a student's and faculty member's physics life. They serve to bring the Department together, inform us of important research outside the University, and enrich our appreciation of our chosen field.

2005 Eggs-Traordinary Catapult Challenge | April 7, 2005

SPS will be kicking off it's new competition next week - the Eggs-Traordinary Catapult Challenge. The competition will be Friday April 15 at 2:00pm in the fields south of the School of Management (SOM). Full information can be found here.

Build a projectile designed to protect an egg from an impact. We'll be launching these projectiles from the new SPS catapult. We have trophies for the most creative design and the best physics. Entry forms will be up shortly, and we'll bring extras to the contest. See you there!

Edible Car Competition Returns! | October 22, 2004

The 3rd (Slightly More Than) Annual SPS Increbidle Edible Car Competition will be held in two weeks time. We will be hosting it in a Galaxy Room this year. The contest is November 5 at 2:00pm. Three unidentified faculty members will be serving as judges.

An Edible Car is a small racer that is constructed entirely out of food products. The important thing is to be creative and have fun. The Competition is an excellent application of knowledge of machanics. Please note: The car materials must be consdiered edible by the general populace, not merely something you are willing to eat. All final decisions are up to the judges. Awards are given for Best Physics, Artistic Interpretation, and Best Wreck. Rules and entry forms can be found here.

Welcome Back! | August 20, 2004

Welcome back for the Fall 2004 semester. We're undergoing a few additions to the website, so updates will slowly trickle in over the semester. We'll be keeping you posted.

Marfa Trip Begins | May 9, 2004

Congratulations to our 2004 graduates! Also, our chapter would like to wish those leaving on our Marfa Lights Expedition tomorrow a safe journey. Read about it here.

Movie Night! | February 15, 2004

Greetings All!

In honour of the Edible Car Competition next week, SPS will be hosting a Movie Night this Friday in Kusch Auditorium at 5:30 pm. What else to show for a car competition but Blake Edwards' "The Great Race"

Jack Lemmon plays Professor Fate (not really evil, just the villain) while Tony Curtis is The Great Leslie in this whimsical farce about a turn of the century automobile race from New York to Paris. Join Fate and his henchman Max (Peter Falk) as they lay numerous physics-related traps for Leslie along 20,000 miles, filled with barroom brawls, sinking icebergs, political intrigue, and precisely 2,357 pies in the face.

We'll also have Dilbert: The Animated Series for a pre-/post-show, depending on requests.

See you there.

Concerning the Marfa Lights | February 12, 2004

Aloha,

I realize the word is out, but confirmation never hurts - SPS will be going camping to the Davis Mountains this summer from May 10-14. Families and friends are more than welcome to participate, but we need to know early how many people are going as plans are being made for campsite and van reservations, food, etc. Whether you will be coming in our vans, or via your own mode of transportation, please inform Laura, Elaine, Jeff, or me on your decision and size of party.

Schlumberger Technology Corporation has agreed to fund the proposal we put in titled "An Experimental Analysis of the Marfa Lights." We proposed to show that the lights (visible from Marfa, a town roughly 20 miles south of our campsite) that are believed by many to be completely unexplained and random are simply car head and tail lights appearing and disappearing in the crests and troughs of the distant mountains.

The experiments will be conducted in the time frame of the camping trip and the collected data will be analyzed and written up for possible publication in the fall semester. If you would like to get involved, please let me know your schedule, so I can determine the best meeting times for us. I would like to have the first meeting soon, as we do have a lot to discuss.

I especially encourage undergrads to participate; aside from having fun playing with various toys such as CB radios, telescopes, and spectrometers, you will have a chance to get your name on a published paper!

Please, do not hesitate to email me with any questions you may have.

Best Regards,

Sasha
SPS President

Marfa Lights Research Project Begins | January 28, 2004

Good news, everyone. AIP and the Schlumberger Technology Corporation have agreed to fund our proposed research expedition to investigate the Marfa Lights. This unique experiment will be conducted by our own SPS members with the aid of several faculty members. The experiment itself will be taking place in May, but we will be providing updates periodically

You can read about our updates at the Marfa Lights Experiment page.

Movie Night this Friday | January 26, 2004

Don't forget that we meet this Friday for the first movie night of the semester! We'll be watching "Total Recall" in honor of the recent Mars mission, followed by "The Prisoner" (everyman's favorite sci-fi series). The fun begins at 5:30, but we'll be meeting in the SPS room for a brief chat and pizza at 4:45. Be seeing you.

SPS wins an award | January 08, 2004

Congratulations Everyone!

The National SPS office has recognized UTD's chapter with the Outstanding SPS Chapter Award for the
2002 - 2003 school year.

This prestigious award is only granted to SPS chapters that demonstrate their success by promoting and getting involved in a variety of activities.

Swing by the SPS room to glance at the awarded plaque pinned on the wall above the blue SPS flag.

Spring semester is just around the corner. I hope you had a good break and are ready to start pumping iron again. We will be having a meeting shortly after the beginning of classes to share exciting upcoming semester activities (details along the way). Stay involved and keep participating!

Searching for Bobby Fischer | November 15, 2003

Hello everyone!

I know everybody is extremely busy this time of year, so a relaxing Friday Movie Night is just what the doctor ordered.

First, let's meet in the SPS room at 5:00 p.m. for a brief discussion on a few topics, including the famous Marfa lights experiments that everyone is talking about!

At around 5:30 we will head over to Kusch for our feature presentation, Searching for Bobby Fisher.

See you soon,
Sasha
