The Society of Physics Students (SPS) is a professional association explicitly designed for students. Membership, through collegiate chapters, is open to anyone interested in physics. The only requirement for membership is that you be interested in physics. Besides physics majors, our members include majors in chemistry, computer science, engineering, geology, mathematics, medicine, and other fields.

Within the SPS, Sigma Pi Sigma, a nationally recognized scholastic honor society, elects members on the basis of outstanding academic achievement. This two-in-one Society operates within the American Institute of Physics (AIP).

The SPS exists to help students transform themselves into contributing members of the professional community. Course work develops only one range of skills. Other skills needed to flourish professionally include effective communication and personal interactions, leadership experience, establishing a personal network of contacts, presenting scholarly work in professional meetings and journals, and outreach services to the campus and local communities.

Locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally, the SPS offers the opportunity for these important enrichments to the student's experience.

Our Chapter

Our chapter is one of the most active academic organizations on the UTD campus. We host several campus-wide competitions each year, as well as various moive nights throughout the semester in Kusch Auditorium and other fun activities for both students and faculty. We have recently won the SPS Outstanding Chapter Award for the 2002-2003 academic year, as well as recieved national funding for a student-led experiment investigating probable causes of the Marfa Lights. We also sponsor tutoring programs for science and math courses.

Our Location

Our Chapter room is FO1.406. It is located in the basement of Founders. The easiest way to find us is to find our blue bulletin board in the central hallway of Founders, ground floor (technically level 2), and take the stairs near it down to the basement. When you exit the stairway, you should turn left (north) and you will almost immediately see a corridor off to your right(east). Take it, and we are the second door on the left. There is also a map on the bulletin board noted above.
