Update | December 15, 2005

We've submitted our progress report, which can be viewed here.

Schlumberger Technology Corporation has agreed to fund the proposal we put in titled "An Experimental Analysis of the Marfa Lights." We proposed to show that the lights (visible from Marfa, a town roughly 20 miles south of our campsite) that are believed by many to be completely unexplained and random are simply car head and tail lights appearing and disappearing in the crests and troughs of the distant mountains. Our experiments will take on multiple approaches:

  History of the Marfa Lights
Triangulation of the source of the lights
Stationing a control vehicle to be "detected"
Correlation of traffic flow to number of lights seen

Our full proposal can be seen here
