The Teacher Development Center
Background: The Office of Teacher Education was established in fall 1975 under the direction of the Vice President of Academic Affairs. In 1987 the Office was placed under the direction of the Dean of Graduate Studies. Between 1992 and 1993, the Office of Teacher Education became affiliated with the School of General Studies. Due to large numbers of science and mathematics faculty involved with teacher education, the office was transferred in 1993 to the School of Natural Science and Mathematics. In fall 1998, the Office of Teacher Education was returned to the School of General Studies to become The Teacher Development Center while Science and Mathematics Education remained with the School of Natural Science and Mathematics.

The Communication and Learning Center
The Communication and Learning Center promotes the Reading One-to-One program which took form in Spring 1991 when 30 UTD undergraduate and graduate students were recruited to participate in an elementary student tutoring project for course credit. The students found that the young students did not have adequate background for advancement in their reading skills and so compiled a curriculum designed to improve their reading abilities. Positive results for students and strong word-of-mouth among principals and teachers permitted Reading One-to-One to expand to 26 schools during 1993-94, and 32 schools during 1994-95. The program currently operates in three Texas cities (Brownsville, Richardson and Houston); two cities in Utah (Salt Lake City and Provo); Iditarod, Alaska; Kansas City, Kansas and Guanajuato, Mexico. In January1998, the Texas Children’s AmeriCorps Program, a statewide tutoring program, asked UTD to train and monitor 110 AmeriCorps members placed as tutors in eight sites throughout Texas. During Fall 1998, the America Reads program in Washington, D.C. implemented portions of UTD's program in sixteen school sites using work-study students as tutors. America Reads sites at SMU and Stanford University also began implementing UTD's program. For more information, please go to www.utdallas.edu/research/clc.
