Pep Band

Pep Band

The UTD Pep Band offers students, faculty, and staff an opportunity to participate in the excitement of athletic and campus community events and to perform within the greater Dallas area. The Pep Band is one of the most visible performance ensembles on campus. We play at men’s and women’s home basketball games and women’s volleyball games, and for National Night Out, Scholars’ Day, and Homecoming.

Even with all these performances, playing in the UTD Pep Band requires only a fraction of the time commitment that high school band did. Most of our members major in something other than music and find participation in Pep Band compatible with their academic success.

Participation Info

Any UT Dallas undergraduate student, graduate student, faculty, or staff member who has ensemble experience on any of the following instruments can join: flute, piccolo, clarinet, alto sax, tenor sax, bari sax, trumpet, French horn (mellophone), trombone, bass trombone, euphonium/baritone (marching baritone), tuba (sousaphone), bass guitar, and drum set.

Pep Band is a one-credit class, MUSI 2113. Rehearsals are on Thursdays 7 to 9 p.m. in PHY 1.304. To join, simply fill out the interest form and register for MUSI 2113.

If you don’t want to quit playing your instrument, or if you miss playing and want to start again, the UTD Pep Band is the ensemble for you.

Student images will be used for publicity purposes online and in print. If you do not wish to have your picture and/or performance audio made available, please let me know by the end of the first week of classes.

Audition Info

Except for bass guitar and drum set, you do not have to audition for membership. There will, however, be wind and brass auditions at the beginning of camp (see below) for chair and part placement. Shortly after completing the interest form, you will get access to the audition music in eLearning.

Bass guitarists and drummers should email pepband@utdallas.edu or call 972-883-6007 no later than Friday, Aug. 5, to get access to the audition music and to set up an audition. For first-year and transfer students, it may be possible with enough notice to schedule your audition during your orientation dates.

Bass guitarists and drummers must be able to read music.

2023 Pep Band Camp

August 17-18, 9:00 – 4:00, in PHY. Lunch will be provided both days. Dinner will also be provided on the 18th.

Following the rehearsal on August 18, the Pep Band will play all the music learned during the camp at the Residence Hall Rumble, 7:00–8:30 p.m., in the Activity Center Main Gym.

Camp time is spent rehearsing most of our music for the semester so that 1) the band is ready to perform for campus and athletic events at the start of classes and 2) we can back off some on rehearsals in October and November, when academic demands tend to pick up. Additionally, the camp provides a great opportunity for students to get to know fellow Comets who share a common interest before classes even start.

What are you waiting for? Fill out the interest form today!
