An important feature of the undergraduate physics degree program is the opportunity to participate in research projects. The department is strongly research-oriented with specializations in astrophysics, atmospheric and space sciences, atomic and molecular physics, high energy physics, quantum electronics, relativity, and materials science. Check with faculty in these areas for ways that you can get involved.
The department is also affiliated with several research experience programs at national and international summer schools. These provide additional opportunities to qualified students. Keep an eye on the department and Society of Physics Students bulletin boards for these opportunities that appear at the beginning of each year.
Such research experiences offer valuable training and help prepare a student for future advancement in university graduate programs and in the world of business and technology.
Institutions with summer programs for undergraduates include:
- Caltech Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship Program – variety of research areas at Caltech and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory
- National Science Foundation – features a 'large list' of projects divided by subject
