Exploring Leadership Academies
July 5-12, 2003 AND July 12-19, 2003

Background: - In Summer 2003, selected Law Enforcement Explorers will have the unique experience of participating in National Law Enforcement Explorer Leadership Academies conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation at FBI at Quantico and the Drug Enforcement Administration at Quantico. Participants will be housed at George Washington University and/or Quantico.

Eligibility: - Explorers must complete the attached application, secure the necessary approvals and submit the application along with a statement of "What Law Enforcement Exploring Has Meant to Me" in no fewer than 500 words. The applicant must be a current participant of Law Enforcement Exploring for no less than 12 months.

Academy Content: - The focus of the academy will be on leadership and will deal with the dynamics of leadership, motivating others, and effective law enforcement leadership. In addition, some of the highly specialized law enforcement programs offered by various federal law enforcement agencies will be made available including lunch with federal agency directors.

Plan: - Explorers will be selected to attend the leadership academy. The academies will begin with arrival on Saturday, July 5 or July 12. The instructional portion will last through Friday, July 11 or July 18, depending on which academy is assigned to the participants.

Fees: - The cost for the participants will be transportation to and from Washington, DC (Ronald Reagan National Airport), and a $50.00 administration fee. (DO NOT SEND ANY MONEY WITH THIS APPLICATION). Academy Explorers will be expected to cover costs for all breakfasts in Washington, DC and some dinners. Housing, most lunches and some dinners, insurance, and fees for the academy will be provided. Explorers arriving early or staying late will be responsible for early late costs. Of course, spending money and uniform costs are the participant's responsibility.

Uniform: - Each Explorer must bring one and preferably two post dress uniforms.

Deadline: - The nomination form with the appropriate certifications must be RECEIVED, not postmarked, in the national office no later than February 19, 2003, Late applications will not be considered.

Selection Process: - Each application will be reviewed by a selection process using law enforcement executives composed of members of the National Law Enforcement Exploring Committee and the applicant will be notified by April 30, 2003, or earlier.
