Four New Officers Join UTD PD
12-27-2005, Congratulations to Officer Sergio Rodriquez and Officer Tom
Lee on their graduation from the UT System Police Academy earlier this
month.
Both Officers were members of the UTD Police Explorer Program, served as
Post Captain, and are past recipients of the Explorer of the Year Award.
Prior to attending the Academy, Officer Lee served as a Communications
Officer with UTD Police. Officer Rodriquez is a soldier in the U.S. Army
Reserve and recently completed a tour of duty in Iraq.
In October 2005, Officer Angela Willis joined the UTD Police Department
and had prior service with the UT-Tyler Police Department. In November
2005, Officer Jon Hooper rejoined the Department. Officer Hooper has
several years of prior service with the UTD Police Department.
Congratulations and welcome to the newest additions to our
staff of commissioned Officers.
The President's Volunteer Service Award
12-19-2005, The following UTD Police Department personnel were
presented with Volunteer Service Awards. The awards program
recognizes individuals and organizations for their commitment to community
service. Established in 2003 by President George W.Bush, the
President's Council on Service and Civic Participation administers
the program. There are four levels of recognition. (Bronze 100-249 hours,
Silver 250-499 hours, Gold 500 or more, and Lifetime at 4,000 or more).
Additionally, the UTD Police Explorer Post was recognized with a Gold
Award for completing more than 1000 hours of community service.
Congratulations to the recipients and thank you for you continued
outstanding service.

UTD Officer awarded Advisor of the Year
12-09-2005, Senior Detective Steve Finney was honored as Advisor of
the Year for his work with the Law Enforcement Exploring program by
Circle Ten Council, Boy Scouts of America/Learning For Life.
Detective Finney has served as Advisor in the UTD Police Explorer
program for five years, and has served as the Post's Executive Advisor
for the past three years. Detective Finney coordinates Explorer
training and provides additional intensive training for the
competition teams. His participation and leadership in the program
has been instrumental in the success of our program. Congratulations
to Detective Finney, and our sincere appreciation for all he does
to make the Exploring an excellent program for the UTD students.

UTD Officer Selected as National Trainer
10-22-2005, Ofc. Richard McMillan has been selected by the International
Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators (IACLEA) as a
trainer in Incident Command. Sixteen individuals from across the country
were selected after a highly competitive training scenario and interview
process. These trainers will provide Incident Command training to
campuses across the country; funded by FEMA. Congratulations, Mac!
Congratulations on Your Promotion
10-01-2005, Three UTD officers have been promoted to the rank of
Corporal. Officer Misty Boyd has been appointed to serve in the newly
created position of Corporal assigned to coordinate and supervise the
Crime Prevention Unit and related programs. Officer Kendra Penny has
been promoted to the Corporal position on the "Deep Nights" Patrol as
the assistant shift supervisor. Detective Steve Finney was promoted
to the position of Senior Detective (Corporal) in the Criminal
Investigations Division.
Parking Office Moves to McDermott
09-19-2005, The Parking Office has moved out of the Police Building on
east side of campus to the Bursar's Office in the lower level of the
McDermott Library. Parking Services at the Bursar's office will collect
monies related to parking citations, moving citations, and parking permit
purchases. Parking permits will be issued at the Buarsar's Office.
Officer Parson Memorial Scholarship Awarded
08-31-2005, UTD Student, Irene Pospelova became the first student awarded
the scholarship. The memorial scholarship honors Officer Bernard Parson
and his life of service. Congratulations to Irene on receiving this honor.

Officer Receives UTD Outstanding Employee Award
The UTD Office of Business Affairs Outstanding Employee Award Program
was established to recognize outstanding performance and special
achievements of Business Affairs Employees. Four employees each
fiscal year are given recognition. Congratulations to Sergeant Roger
Stearns for being honored with this award.
Special Commission Leads to Increase in Officers
The Subcommittee on Safety and Security, which is chaired by Police
Chief Bill Taylor of Rice University in Houston, noted that UTD has
grown considerably and should increase the size of the campus police
force. Dr. Daniel responded that "as a concrete demonstration of the
University's commitment to safety," he was immediately authorizing
the hiring of seven additional police officers. The University's

Congratulations on Your Promotion
Effective July 1st, Jason Wall began service as the Chief of Police
for the city of Whitewright, Texas. Chief Wall provided UT System
Police with 17 years of service. We wish him all the best on his new
opportunity.

We are also pleased to announce the promotion of Officer Kip Phillips
to Sergeant. He has been assigned as the patrol supervisor over the
"deep nights" shift. Sergeant Phillips has 13 years of law enforcement
service, 11 of which have been with the UTD Police Department.
UTDPD Explorers Win State Competition
On April 2nd the Texas Law Enforcement Explorer Advisor Association
held
its annual competition at UTD. The UTDPD Explorer team placed first in
each of the four scenarios it competed in, (Drug Arrest Search &
Seizure,
Felony Traffic stops, Medical Assist, and Burglary in Progress). Our
Explorers took 1st Place Overall Team and 1st Place Overall Post.
The UTD Police Department was also honored by TLEEAA as Agency of the
Year.

This program is open to anyone who is part of UTD, as Faculty,
Student, or Staff. We welcome you all, even if it is simply to ask

Explorers Selected for National Academy
Post Captain Mark Routson and Post Lieutenant Karla Beckner have both
been selected to attend the National Explorer Leadership Academy
program this summer. The program is sponsored by the FBI, DEA, US
Marshals, US Army Military Police. The Academy is held every two
years with only 30 Explorers selected nationwide for each Academy
Class. We are honored to have two UTD students attending.
Self-Defense Class for Women
UTD Police offers the RAD - Rape, Agression, Defense program for the
UTD community. Course participation is restricted to female students,

UTD Explorers Place 1st at Competition
UTD Police Explorers competed Feb. 5th at a regional
competition in Lake Jackson. The team consisted of Explorers
Karla Beckner, Mike Flotte, Matt Sartor, and Stephen Kuo.
