Field Operations

Patrol Division

The Patrol Operations Division affectionately and traditionally referred to as the "Backbone of Policing" falls under the Office of Field Operations. The Patrol Division is the largest division within the UT Dallas Police Department. In addition to conventional law enforcement activities, the Patrol Division is guided by the philosophy of Community Oriented Policing and problem solving. The general mission of the Patrol Division is to provide a safe and secure environment for learning and living.

The Patrol Division operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Patrol Officers are the most visible elements within the Department, and have the most immediate and direct contact with the community. All Patrol Officers are state certified Commissioned Peace Officers, having completed more than 22 weeks of police academy training. The state-wide academy for the UT System Police is located in Austin, Texas. All UT System Police Officers meet Texas Commission of Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education requirements. Additionally, each Officer is required to participate in state mandated and additional continued educational training throughout the year. Officers also hold membership and participate in several Law Enforcement professional associations and organizations. The Patrol Division also consists of Field Training Officers and a Field Training Program Coordinator who works under the guidance of the Department Training Unit.

The Patrol Division is commanded by a Lieutenant. Each Patrol shift is supervised by a Patrol Sergeant who is assisted by a Patrol Corporal. Patrol Supervisors are responsible for daily operations of each shift and Officer. Each Patrol Shift is comprised of several Patrol Officers who are responsible for patrol activities.

Patrol elements are dispatched directly to all emergency calls and calls for service & assistance. Patrol Officers are first responders to criminal offenses, emergency incidents and assistance calls. Some of the responsibilities of Patrol Officers include preventative and directed patrol, conducting initial preliminary investigations, offender and/or fugitive apprehension, victim assistance, crime scene control & investigation, prisoner book-in and transports, crowd control, special events support, report writing, court appearances and when assigned, case follow-up investigations. Patrol Officers also conduct daily foot patrols on the interior and exterior areas of the campus. This activity provides closer contact with the public and assists in the deterrence of criminal activity. Nine large apartment complexes, dozens of parking lots and land tracks, buildings, and facilities comprise the approximate five square mile primary patrol area. These areas fall within both Collin and Dallas Counties as well as the cities of Richardson and Dallas. The population served by the Patrol Division ranges anywhere from fifteen to twenty thousand people on any given day. The population consists of students, faculty, staff, visitors and guests.

Furthermore, the Patrol Division is comprised of several units. The Division has a Motorcycle Unit with the primary function of traffic enforcement. Other duties include accident investigation and special events. Motor Unit Officers receive special and continued training in this area.

The Patrol Division also has a Bike Patrol Program. The Bike Patrol program consists of Patrol Officers, Non-Commissioned Officers, and Police Explorers that patrol the campus on special police equipped mountain bikes. Bike Patrol Officers have the benefit of increased access to the interior of the campus, where it is difficult to maneuver a patrol car. This unit provides increased visibility which helps to prevent and deter crime, and in many instances a quicker response to emergency calls. Bike Patrol Unit Officers receive special training in Tactical Bike Operations.

The Patrol Division is also comprised of Tactical Officers. These selected Officers received specialized training in Tactical Operations. They assist with Warrants Service and Special Operations.

In addition, the Office of Field Operations Division of Community Programs is supplemented by numerous Officers from the Patrol Division who participate and support Department Community Policing Programs.
