The UTD Branch of the Innocence Project of Texas
Because UTD houses a branch office of the Innocence Project of Texas on campus, students may participate in a seminar where they work with the Innocence Project to evaluate prisoner claims of innocence; and they may also work as interns with the project. The Innocence Project represents persons in Texas prisons who claim actual innocence. Students and interns examine court documents, witness statements, trial transcripts and other evidence to determine whether there is enough cause to request a trial on the basis of new evidence. Many of these cases involve use of DNA evidence, but increasingly the Innocence Project is examining other claims of innocence such as mistaken eyewitness testimony and junk science. Students interested in taking the seminar or interning with IPOT should contact Dr. Anthony Champagne.
