A Moment of Silence
Dear Colleagues and Students,
At 10 a.m. Monday, you are invited as a member of the University community to join people across the country observing a moment of silence as an expression of support for Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and other victims of a deplorable shooting Saturday in Tucson.
As I consider the loss to so many because of this terrible incident, it seems important to express our gratitude to the public-spirited men and women who serve as our elected officials, in our judiciary and as government staff members.
It is also important to remember and revere the citizens who cared enough to come out and meet personally with their representative, a very American expression of a fundamental value of our democracy. Those seemingly ordinary citizens will be remembered for reminding us how extraordinary our country’s rights and values remain, even when momentarily subverted in such a tragic way.
Please take time to reflect in whatever way best serves you, whether you choose to meet briefly in a conference room with colleagues or pause for a quiet moment at your job. My thoughts will center on the courage and commitment of so many who believe in the freedoms and values that our country embraces, and the sacrifices of these individuals and their families.
