Swimming Classes FAQ

What is the dress code for the pool?

Proper swim suit attire is required in the pool. T-shirts and cargo shorts are not recommended. Instead, we recommend wetsuits or thermal wear for those who need to cover their top and shoulders. Swim trunks are also accepted. Please see an instructor if you are unsure of what you have is appropriate.

How many people are in a class?

The number depends on how many people sign-up. There may be two in a class or ten.

Classes have already started. May I/my child still register?

We highly recommend you to pre-register so instructors know what to expect on the first day and the basics of swimming will not be missed. However, if there is still space you may register and join the class. Please check with the lead instructor and Activity Center front control desk about openings.

What is the student-to-instructor ratio?

We do our best to provide each student with a sufficient amount of attention within a class. There are usually two instructors present at every class. Ratio is about five students to one instructor. Students will be grouped according to skill level.

I/my child can't make a class. May I reschedule?

No. Swim classes are not rescheduled for individuals who have conflicts or prior arrangements during class time. If a student is late, classes will not go over to accommodate for the student's full hour. Only if the university is closed unexpectedly during a class time will arrangements be made for another class.

What will I/my child learn in this class?

For beginners, we will teach the basics of swimming and freestyle/front crawl. For intermediate and advanced swimmers, we will work on stroke technique and introduce new strokes. Deep end swimming, diving, and flip turns will also be taught if time allows. Near the end of a child's class, games will be played.

Why is my child not being taught for the full hour like other children? Why is everyone getting out after 45 minutes?

There are a number of reasons a child's class may end earlier than the adult class. Safety is our number one priority for your child, swimming second. Due to size, smaller children often get cold in the water quicker than larger children. If we see lips or body start to quiver and shiver, we will take a child out. During a class, the children will be learning and practicing, often tiring them out. After 45 minutes, if exhaustion is seen, we will take the children out. We do our best to keep all classes on cruise control with behavior and minimize unnecessary disturbances. However, if a child creates too many problems, an instructor may take a child out so other children may be taught without being distracted. We also end the class after 50 minutes so that we can talk with the parents about there childrens' progress.

Do I/my child need to wear a swim cap and goggles?

Swim caps are not necessary, but we recommend people with long hair to pull it back with a hair band or hair piece. Goggles help protect your eyes from chlorine and seeing under the water. Seeing under the water helps with balance and navigation in the pool.

May I/my child sign-up for the next session?

Yes, you may register for the next session if you would like to learn more. You will not begin with the basics, but rather as an intermediate or advanced swimmer. Please see the Activity Center front control desk for registering.
