Undergraduate Research Scholar Award Program

Goals of the Program

The University of Texas at Dallas strongly encourages student engagement in the research work of the University. Undergraduate students benefit by learning how to solve unique intellectual challenges in a structured and supervised university research environment. Undergraduate research scholars will often interact with graduate students, faculty members, and other members of a research team. Students benefit not only in terms of advancing their knowledge of the research topic, but also by developing valuable and sophisticated skills in self discovery and inquiry. Students also benefit by getting to know faculty and senior research staff, who can provide the student with career guidance and references.

Scholar Awards

Undergraduate Research Scholar Awards are made for a single year and are awarded by the Vice President for Research. Funds are limited, and awards are made on a competitive basis. The award consists of a cash stipend of $500 paid to the student, as well as an award of $300 transferred to a University account controlled by the faculty sponsor to support the research project (e.g., laboratory equipment, poster printing, project travel, etc.) or related activities. Cash stipends paid to students are subject to deductions for required taxes.

There are no restrictions on the nature of the research - it can be in any field. However, the research must be on a serious, credible topic of inquiry, and there must be a faculty supervisor for the project.

Upon completion of the project, the research scholar must participate in a Poster Contest which will be held at the end of the Spring 2010 semester.

Researchers also will be expected to submit a one-page report summarizing the research activities, with the faculty sponsor certifying that the student satisfactorily completed the project.
