CIRCUMFERENCE a new journal of poetry in translation, is devoted to presenting translations of new work
being written around the globe, new visions of classical poems, and translations of foreign language poets
of the past who have fallen under the radar of American readers.  We are especially excited to show translation
as the vibrant, necessary interaction that it is. 

A biannual publication, CIRCUMFERENCE prints all poems in the original language side-by-side with their English
translations. Our first issue is currently being printed, and includes poems in more than 20 languages with translations
by Elizabeth Macklin, Christopher Merrill, Hiroaki Sato, Odile Cisneros, Jen Hofer, Paul Muldoon, Kristin Prevallet, Marilyn Hacker, and Rick Snyder. Our extremely supportive advisory board consists of Joshua Beckman, Caroline Crumpacker,
Richard Howard, Brett Fletcher Lauer, Rosmarie Waldrop, and Eliot Weinberger.

accepts new translations of poetry. Submissions will be accepted throughout the year.

Translators must have permission.  A reading to launch this first issue will take place on November 20, 7:30pm, at Teachers & Writers Collaborative, 5 Union Square West, 7th Floor. Translators Kristin Prevallet, Flávia Rocha, Matthew Rohrer, Hiroaki Sato, & Rick Snyder will read poems in French, Portuguese, German, Japanese, and Latin, along with their own translations into English. WRITERS/RESEARCHERS WITH FOREIGN LANGUAGE ABILITY: Gale (www.gale.com), a leading reference book publisher based in Farmington Hills, Michigan, is seeking entry writers for its long standing series Contemporary Authors--a premier source for bio-bibliographical information on current writers in a variety of genres.  Contemporary Authors is expanding its international content and will be including coverage on Korean, Portuguese, Malay, Tamil, Arabic, Thai, Welsh, Dutch, Danish, Swedish, Chinese, Afrikaans, and Japanese authors.  Ideal candidates will posses both language expertise and familiarity with contemporary literature of at least one of the listed countries, as well as copyediting skills. Selected applicants will write entries on a specified author, providing biographical information, a complete list of published works, and an essay on the author’s life and work (ranging from 250 to 1,000 words) in English.  Contributors may be expected to conduct biographical, bibliographical, and critical research.  In addition, contributors may be required to translate original source materials into English. Candidates must possess a clear and concise writing style appropriate in tone and reading level for a high-school audience, as well as a personal computer, e-mail, and Y2K compliant software (MS Word 97 or upgrade). They must adhere to style and coding specifications and have the ability to meet deadlines.

Transitions Online, the Prague-based journal of current affairs, cultures, and societies in the post-communist world.
We would like to broaden our contacts among translators of the 50 or so languages spoken in our coverage area from Slovenia to Mongolia and from Karelia to Tajikistan. The Transitions culture site commissions occasional short (500 - 3,000 word) translations of literature and nonfiction, including journalism. The original text should be from a new or forthcoming book or periodical. Payment depends on length.

Absinthe: New European Writing is a new print journal publishing original translations into English of work by European writers; the writing may include poetry, novel excerpts, short stories, drama, essays, or interviews. We do not consider work that has been previously published in English translation in the U.S.  No simultaneous submissions please.  We will consider up to 5 poems from a single contributor. We prefer prose submissions to be no longer than 6000 words but will consider longer works when accompanied by a short summary. Please provide a biographical summary of the author and enclose a copy of the original text when possible. Translators are expected to obtain copyright permission for work to be published in Absinthe: New European Writing.  In addition, we attempt to include a photo for each author featured so we ask that translators provide assistance in securing an author photo.  Unfortunately, at this time we are unable to offer financial remuneration but are pleased to provide a copy of the journal to translators and authors.  We welcome electronic submissions, please save text as RTF (Rich Text Format) and email to dhayes@absinthenew.com.

Here is a call for submissions for the second issue of Composite: Multiple Translations.    The poem for this issue is "Fusion" by Juana de Ibarbourou, an Uruguayan poet.  De Ibarbourou lived from 1892 to 1979, published many books of poetry, plays, essays, and stories, and was best known for her groundbreaking early work and for taking up the mantle of Delmira Agustini, who she called her "older sister". "Fusion" was first published in 1919.

Contributors get around 6-10 copies of the magazine, which is cheaply printed but nice looking, and small enough to fit in a pocket.

I gave away or sold about 300 of the first issue, which featured "Recuillement" by Charles Baudelaire.  There are still some copies left.  You can see general information on the magazine at http://compositetranslation.com/.  The point of the magazine is to have fun comparing a variety of translations of a single poem.
