Through the Center for Translation Studies, researchers and students
have access to the American
Literary Translators Association. The Center houses ALTA's
national office. Founded in 1978, ALTA provides essential services
to literary translators from all languages and creates a professional
forum for the exchange of ideas on the art and craft of literary
translation. Through its annual conference, its publications,
and collaboration with other professional organizations, ALTA
works to enhance the quality and status of literary translation
and to improve the market for the publication of literary translation.
With ALTA, visitors to the Center have access to a national network
of literary translators and specialists in foreign languages and
literatures.
The American Literary Translators Association offers ALTA
Fellowships to beginning translators each year. The award
provides travel to the annual conference and participation in
a special fellows reading.
The ALTA website keeps lists of other
centers for the study of translation as well as journals
and publishers interested in translation. ALTA also posts
relevant grant
opportunities. In its Members' Section, the website has information
on job openings.
