U.T. System Officials to Discuss Telecommunications
Programs in Mexico
AUSTIN - Chancellor R.D. Burck and other officials from the University
of Texas System will meet with government and education leaders in Mexico
next week to discuss the use of telecommunications technology, student
and faculty exchange programs, and joint research opportunities in medicine
and higher education.
The U.T. System officials will attend technical meetings on April 8 and
the Mexican government's High Level Conference on Tele-Medicine and Tele-Education
on April 9. The meetings will be at Los Pinos, the official residence
of President Vicente Fox near Mexico City.
"Our main objective in attending these meetings is to identify new
opportunities for collaboration in medicine and education between the
U.T. System and Mexican universities and health institutions," Burck
said. "Telecommunication technologies offer exciting avenues for
enhancing and expanding our numerous current relationships with institutions
in Mexico. We want to learn more about Mexican institutions and how we
might form new collaborations for our mutual benefit."
Participation of U.T. System officials has been arranged by Juan Hernandez,
chief of the Presidential Office for the Attention of Mexicans Abroad
as well as a faculty member at U.T. Dallas and an adviser to the U.T.
System chancellor. Other members of the U.T. System delegation are Edwin
R. Sharpe, executive vice chancellor for academic affairs; James C. Guckian,
acting executive vice chancellor for health affairs; Armando Diaz, vice
chancellor for community relations; and Rodolfo Hernández, director
of the Center for U.S.-Mexico Studies at U.T. Dallas. Buddy Garcia, special
assistant to the governor for border/Mexico affairs, will represent Gov.
Rick Perry.
Mexican officials who will attend include Julio Frenk, secretary of health;
Reyes Tamez Guerra, secretary of education; Rogelio Cárdenas, president
of the University of Zacatecas; Enrique Doger, president of the Benemérita
University of Puebla; and Jaime Parada Avila, general director of the
Mexican Council of Science and Technology.
