Interplay at UTD Oct. 6–Nov. 10

Art Exhibition Breaks Boundaries Between Media, Culture

RICHARDSON, Texas (Sept. 5, 2006) — The traveling international exhibition Interplay, created in honor of the 10th anniversary of the Center for U.S.–Mexico Studies at The University of Texas at Dallas (UTD), will run in the main gallery of UTD’s Visual Arts Building from Oct. 6 to Nov. 10. The exhibit debuted at the University of Guanajuato (UG) in Mexico Aug. 17.

Interplay features the works of a varied group of UTD students and graduates, including Elizabeth Alavi, Mary Benedicto, Todd Camplin, Shelby Cunningham, Robert Flowers, Tuan Ho, Jin-Ya Huang, Sara Ishii, Kirsten Macy, John Ryan Moore, Polly Perez, Bill Schroeder, Paul Slocum, Raychael Stine, Tim Stokes, Reynaldo Thompson, Kevin Todora and Jeff Yerger.

An opening reception for the exhibition will take place on Friday, Oct. 6, from 6:30 to 9 p.m.

UTD’s Center for U.S. Mexico Studies has sponsored or facilitated collaborations with more than 17 institutions related to higher education on both sides of the border and has fostered bi-national research agendas and cultural exchanges. The center’s 10th anniversary celebration began in March with the dedication of a UG room at UTD and a concert featuring pianist Ana Cervantes and the music group Los Tiempos Pasados.

A delegation of UTD administrators traveled to Guanajuato for the opening, including university President Dr. David E. Daniel and faculty member and exhibition curator John Pomara.

According to Pomara, “today’s young artists have grown up under the influence of computers, the Internet and music videos and now utilize forms of advertising, graphic design, photography and videos in their studio practice, creating an interplay of visual experience. These influences create the shifting kaleidoscope of ideas, methods and techniques which encompass the exhibit.”

Gallery hours are from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday. The gallery is closed on Sundays and university holidays.

The Center for U.S.–Mexico Studies was created in 1995 in response to UTD’s recognition of the richness of the Mexican–American past, as well as the importance of Mexico to the United States.
