Friday FYI UTD VPR&GE Home

The Computer Science and Engineering Department at The University of Texas at Arlington and the Institute of Electronic and Electrical Engineers are co-sponsoring the first international conference in the emerging field of pervasive computing and communications. The conference, PerComm 2003, is scheduled for March 23 - 26 next year in Fort Worth, Texas.

Pervasive computing and communications involve automatic, real-time communications and collaborations among hardwired devices such as mainframe and personal computers and wireless devices such as laptops, PDAs and cell phones. CSE@UTA researchers recently received a $426,000 grant from the National Science Foundation to develop Pervasive Information Communities Organization (PICO), a software architecture that will create an enhanced Internet framework that is not only unique, simple and versatile, but can also work with current and future hardware/software tools.

Information on the conference is available at http://www.PerCom.org.

The environment for MEMS in most military applications is much harsher than many other environments. Electronic components can experience up to 100 kgs at high frequency (> 100 KHz) and high temperature (>400 C). Kevin Kornegay, professor of electrical engineering at Cornell, proposes that silicon carbide (SiC), a wide band gap semiconductor, be used to manufacture both the circuitry and structural members for MEMS devices. Kornegay will present the design, modeling and fabrication of SiC piezo-resistive-based accelerometers with integrated signal conditioning circuitry. This lecture, part of The University of Texas at Arlington NEMS series will be held at 2 p.m. on April 17 at Nedderman Hall, located at 416 Yates on the UTA campus. The University of Texas at Dallas is hosting a workshop beginning at 8:30 a.m. on April 29 in the Conference Center on the UTD campus on value management with key performance indicators

More than 85 % of senior executives say improving their firm's supply-chain performance is one of their top priorities, but fewer than 10% are adequately tracking that performance. And fewer still - 7 % collect the information necessary to meaningfully measure their progress. Those are the findings from a survey by Bain & Company. Moreover most technology projects fail or are challenged by lack of value focus. The objective of this workshop is to provide a systematic approach to set up the Key Performance Indicators (KPI) based Management System to improve the performance of the supply chain and deliver value.
