Friday FYI VPR&GE

Dr. Tom Crouch, senior curator of Aeronautics National Air and Space Museum Smithsonian Institution, will be speaking on the period of legal wrangling that followed the brothers' early flights and present his own analysis of the forces that governed aeronautical progress, both then and now, as well as discuss some of the characteristics of the Wrights that enabled them to succeed where many others had failed. This is a one day workshop held on two different dates at 9 p.m. on either July 1 or 2 at 7301 N State Hwy 161, STE 100 in Irving. There is a $249 charge to attend.

The Local Area Demographic Analysis (LADA) Workshop is designed to help human service providers, grant writers, researchers or anyone that would like to easily look up and analyze demographic characteristics such as race, income, age, language, transportation, employment and housing. This is a small, hands- on workshop that will teach how to analyze, extract and present 2000/1990 Census (focusing on long form SF3 data), American Community Survey and Census Supplemental information. In addition to learning demographic analysis methods, participants construct a 1990-2000 Community Change Profile for Dallas and Dallas Census tracts focusing on twenty demographic variables, learn how to work with non-Census geographic boundaries and boundary changes over time, key elements of a strong demographic analysis, transforming raw data into information and the visual representation of data. While this particular workshop will focus on Dallas, the techniques presented in this workshop will be applicable to any other location. The IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) Consultants' Network is hosting an event on how to get your pitch out in 30 seconds on less with Jerome Brown of Paine Webber as the scheduled speaker. This presentation will take place at 6:15 p.m. on July 14 in the at the Holiday Inn Select located at 1655 N. Central Expressway in Richardson, Texas. International terrorism and executive malfeasance have brought about new perspectives on the operations of every modern enterprise. Three area universities are sponsoring an international symposium July 28 - 30 at The University of Texas at Arlington's Automation & Robotics Research Institute in Fort Worth to explore these challenges and discover potential solutions.

The University of Texas at Arlington, the University of Texas at Dallas and the University of North Texas Health Science Center in Fort Worth are sponsoring the symposium, titled Developing Agile Enterprises to Overcome Vulnerability. Topics of discussion will include the accelerating global competition for new customers, changes in the way enterprises transact businesses, renewed emphasis on returns-on-investment, response to terrorist attacks, and improving investor confidence in top management decisions and performance. The symposium will be of great interest to civic and industry leaders responsible for formulating first-response policies.

Speakers at the symposium include Dr. George Wright, Provost, UTA; Dr. Da Hsuan Feng, vice president for Research and Graduate Education, UTD, who has organized a special session on bioterrorism; Dr. Ron Blanck, President, UNTHSC and a former US Army Surgeon General; Andrey Kostogryzov, Russian Academy of Rocket and Artillery Sciences, Moscow; and Neil Fisher, director of Secure Capability Focus, United Kingdom. Other speakers will include security and health experts from UTA, the University of Texas at Houston Health Science Center and the University of Texas at Tyler Health Science Center. The UT-Houston experts designed response protocols for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta.

NanoSummitt is conference sponsored by Nanotechnology Foundation of Texas, Inc. for researchers and graduate students to foster awareness of the research being done in Texas and to encourage greater collaboration among Texas researchers.
