Friday FYI VPR&GE

ICCCN is a major international conference to present original and fundamental advances in the field of Computer Communications and Networks. It also serves to foster communication among researchers and practitioners working in a wide variety of scientific areas with a common interest in improving Computer Communications and Networks. The conference will be held from October 22-22 in the DoubleTree Hotel at Lincoln Centre in Dallas, Texas.

The primary focus of the conference is on new and original research results in the areas of design, implementation and applications of Computer Communications and Networks.

The second in a series of three lectures focusing on The University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) School of Management and presented by the McDermott Library is scheduled for 2:30 p.m., Monday, Oct. 20. The lectures, free and open to the public, will be held in the McDermott Suite on the fourth floor of the library on the UTD campus.

School of Management Dean Dr. Hasan Pirkul will introduce the program, which will feature Dr. Ted Day and Dr. Suresh Radhakrishnan.

Day is the school's area coordinator for finance and managerial economics and an expert on ranking the performance of security analysts. His topic will be "Security Analysis, Public Information and Trading Profits."
Radhakrishnan is a professor of accounting and information management who is also the director of research in the school's Institute for Excellence in Corporate Governance. His discussion is titled "Valuation Impact of Law and Organization Capital."

The President of Suzhou University, Chun Fa Min, will be talking about how the ancient city of Suzhou coincides with the most modern technology to the benefit of all at 2 p.m. on October 21 at The University of Texas at Dallas School of Management Room 1.118.


Suzhou is a historical city in China known for its canals, bridges, hills, and gardens and is a main attraction for tourists and citizens because of its beauty. It is also one of the main industrial centers in China, and it is the base of the electronic and semiconductor industry.

DFW Homeland Security Alliance, created to address the vulnerabilities in homeland security throughout North Texas, will be hosting the inaugural DFW Homeland Security Alliance Technology Solutions Expo on October 22, 2003, at the Eisemann Center in Richardson, Texas.

The School of Social Sciences at The University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) this month will host a forum about women in the workplace highlighted by two talks by leading researchers who will offer their expertise and insight on the change, progress and prospects for greater equality for women in today's workforce.

The gathering will be held on Friday, Oct. 24, beginning with registration and a reception at 9:30 a.m. and concluding at approximately 1:30 p.m. The theme of the forum is "Workplace Diversity: Assessing the Current Status of Women."

While at the event, attendees will hear two lectures - one from 10-11 a.m. by Dr. Paula England of Northwestern University titled "How Much Progress Women Have Made" and the other from 11 a.m. to noon led by Dr. Nancy DiTomaso of Rutgers University and titled "Women in the 21st Century Corporation." The talks will be followed by a lunch and discussion from 12:15 to 1:30 p.m.

England is a professor of sociology at Northwestern, where she also is affiliated with the school's Institute for Policy Research. A major theme of her work has been that jobs filled largely by women are underpaid relative to the skill levels required. She conducts research on gender inequality in labor markets and in the family, and she also has explored how having children affects women's pay. England, a former editor of American Sociological Review, is the author of two books and many articles. She was a faculty member at UTD from 1975 to 1990.

DiTomaso is a professor of management and global business at Rutgers' Business School. Her research specialties include the management of diversity and change, the management of knowledge-based organizations and the management of scientists and engineers. She has co-authored and co-edited four books and numerous articles.

The Texas Christian University (TCU) Physics and Astronomy Department will host the Eight Annual Joseph Morgan Lecture at 7:30 p.m. on Mon., Oct. 27 at 7:30 p.m. in the Sid Richardson Building, Lecture Hall 1.

This year's featured speaker is Dr. Edward (Rocky) W. Kolb, head of the Theoretical Astrophysics Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. He also is a professor of astronomy and astrophysics at the University of Chicago.

Kolb , who received his Ph.D. in physics from the University of Texas. He completed his postdoctoral research at the California Institute of Technology and Los Almos National Laboratory where he was the J. Robert Oppenheimer Research Fellow. The New Orleans native has served on editorial boards of several international scientific journals, as well as Astronomy Magazine.

Kolb also is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a Fellow of the American Physical Society. He was the 2003 recipient of the Oersted Medal of the American Association of Physics Teachers and the 1993 winner of the Quantrell Prize for Teaching Excellence at the University of Chicago.

William A. Wulf, president of the National Academy of Engineering, will give a luncheon presentation during the Third Annual Technology Fair at noon Wednesday, Oct. 29, in the Bluebonnet Ballroom, E.H. Hereford University Center on The University of Texas at Arlington campus

In his presentation, titled "Some Speculations on the Future Impact of IT on Universities," Wulf examines the significant impact information technology has had on university teaching, scholarship and administration. He proposes that, as computers and communications get ever faster and cheaper, the impact may be even larger. Wulf will also explore some of the areas where this impact may be greatest and the challenges and opportunities that impact creates.

The Local Demographic Analysis Workshop (LDAW) will teach attendees to extract, query, download, analyze and present 2002-1990 demographic data for Dallas and the surrounding communities. The Census Bureau recently released 2002 Census (ACS) data for Dallas and other large Texas communities. This data can provide analysts, grant writers, activists and community planners with a current snap shot of community demographics. Data includes variables such as income, race/ethnicity, age, language, transportation and many others. The Third International Conference on Light Materials for Transportation Systems (LiMAT 2003) will be held on November 2-6, 2003, at the Hilton Hawaiian Village in Honolulu, Hawaii.

LiMAT 2003 will provide a superb forum for materials scientists and researchers from around the world to engage in meaningful technical discussions affecting the weight, efficiency and safety of aerospace, automotive, civil, marine and rail transportation systems.

Diversity issues affecting businesses and government organizations will be the focus of a three-day conference scheduled for Nov. 5-7 in Houston and sponsored by Texas A&M's Center for Human Resource Management, Mays Business School and Race & Ethnic Studies Institute (RESI). The conference, titled "Toward Global Dimensions of Diversity: Exploring Issues and Developing Effective Strategies," will be held at the Hyatt Regency Houston International Airport. It will target information and ideas promoting workplace diversity; address recent U.S. Supreme Court affirmative action decisions and other legal developments pertaining to diversity; and discuss workplace diversity initiatives and how diversity relates to an organization's mission in a global environment. The registration fee is $425 before the conference and on-site the fee is $525, which includes all sessions, workshops, receptions, continental breakfasts, lunches and refreshment breaks. The Mathematics and Statistics Department of Texas Tech University will host, "Mathematical and Computational Modeling of Biological Systems" Nov. 6-8 as part of the Red Raider Mini-Symposium Series.

Speakers scheduled at the symposium include: Jay. D. Humphrey, Ph.D., of Texas A&M University; James Keener, Ph.D., of the University of Utah; Michael Reed, Ph.D., of Duke University; Arthur Sherman, Ph.D., of the National Institutes of Health; Trachetta Jackson, Ph.D., of the University of Michigan; Mette Sofie Olufsen, Ph. D., of North Carolina State University; and Charles Taylor, Ph.D., of Stanford University.

Symposium planners also hope to promote interdisciplinary aspects of problem-solving, to provide a forum that allows early-career researchers and students in math and engineering to interact with scholars to learn of new research venues and existing problems, and to encourage women and under-represented minorities to pursue careers in areas that bridge biological, mathematical and computational sciences.

IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) Consultants' Network is hosting Dr. Paula Grinnell, the president of Paula Joyce Designs for a presentation on creativity and business at 6:15 p.m. on November 10 at the Holiday Inn Select located at 1655 N. Central Expressway in Richardson. Dr. Grinnell helps her clients unleash their creative intelligence and use it for problem solving, innovation and planning. She was the Director of Leadership Development for the Carrollton-Farmers Branch Independent School District. Dr. Grinnell headed the program which trained leaders to incorporate higher order thinking in their work. She did her post doctoral work at Yale in the cognitive psychology department. Dr. Grinnell is an author and has been published internationally. She has also presented to both national and international audiences. There is a $5 for IEEE members and a $10 charge for non-members. Father Tadeusz Pacholczyk, a Catholic priest and neuroscientist, will speak on "Stem Cells and Cloning: Understanding the Scientific Issues and the Moral Objections." The free lecture is sponsored by the Office of Campus Ministry and is scheduled at 7 p.m. on Monday, November 10 in Lynch Auditorium at the University of Dallas. The public is invited to attend.

Father Pacholczyk earned two degrees in advanced theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. Before becoming a priest at age 34, he had completed postdoctoral work at Harvard in neuroscience, and had earned a Ph.D. in the neuroscience at Yale in three-and-a-half years. Pacholczyk holds four undergraduate degrees - in molecular and cellular biology, chemistry, biochemistry, and philosophy - all from the University of Arizona, where he graduated magna cum laude in 1988.

Girls and their mentors will experience the true meaning of "sole" sisters when they team up in a competition to design athletic shoes.

In designing an athletic shoe, the girls will use math and science to create the shoes, including learning about:
-The biomechanics of the foot;
-The differences between male and female feet;
-Creative and analytical thinking skills;

It's A Girl Thing: Engineering and Sports will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 15, at the Junkins Building on the Southern Methodist University (SMU)campus. The competition is targeting middle school girls in order to interest them early in a career in engineering and technology. The competition is part of the SMU School of Engineering¹s strategy to achieve a 50 percent female enrollment, or gender parity, over the next five years.

The University of Texas at Arlington's Computer Science & Engineering Department presents Dr. Mahadev Satyanarayanan, Carnegie Group Professor in the School of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University.

Dr. Satyanarayanan examines the challenges in computer systems research posed by pervasive computing and identifies four new research thrusts: effective use of smart spaces, invisibility, localized scalability, and masking uneven conditioning. The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center has scored baseball great Cal Ripken Jr. as the guest of honor for A Conversation with a Living Legend, the annual fund-raising luncheon scheduled for December 2 in Dallas.

Ripken, who retired from the Baltimore Orioles in 2001, holds Major League Baseball's record of consecutive games played, a coveted title held by Lou Gehrig for 56 years.

The news of Ripken's participation as M. D. Anderson's legend follows his Sept. 6 induction into the Baltimore Orioles Hall of Fame. That date was also the eighth anniversary of Ripken's record-consecutive 2,131st game.

CNN anchor Paula Zahn will interview Ripken at the Wyndham Anatole Hotel. Zahn, a 23-year news veteran, began her career at WFAA-TV in Dallas.

In its 14th year, the fund-raiser has historically filled the Anatole's ballroom, attracting a crowd of approximately 1,500 each year.

Previous sports legends have included Lance Armstrong (2002), Arnold Palmer (1993), Tom Landry (1991) and Nolan Ryan (1990).
