Harold Simmons Foundation Gives $5 Million To Children's Medical Center Dallas
The Harold Simmons Foundation has made a $5 million gift to Children’s Medical Center Dallas to help fund the establishment of the Annette Simmons Heart Hospital at Children’s. The gift will go towards the $150 million wePromise Campaign for Children’s, the largest campaign in the hospital’s 92-year history.
Established in 1939, Children’s cardiac care program is one of the oldest and most respected in the nation. Last year, Children’s performed more than 700 cardiac surgeries, 400 open heart surgeries and 600 heart catheterization procedures.
“A philanthropic gift of this magnitude will allow us to offer care at an internationally premier level,” said Dr. Joseph Forbess, Chairman of the Division of Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery at UT Southwestern and Director of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Children’s. “The fact that the Annette Simmons Heart Hospital will be a physically distinct ‘hospital within a hospital’ dedicated solely to the needs of pediatric cardiac patients will contribute significantly to our ability to provide the highest level of care possible.”
This unique heart hospital will benefit the more than 6,000 children who visit Children’s each year because of heart defects and heart disease.
The Annette Simmons Heart Hospital at Children’s will be just one of the components of the new Comprehensive Center for Heart Care at Children’s. This multi-disciplinary center will offer a space where physicians and medical staff can integrate the best pediatric medical care for cardiac patients, at all stages of treatment. The new heart hospital will be placed on the third floor of Children’s, in the newly built towers, creating a contiguous space that will promote better care, improve the continuity of care patients receive and will foster a collaborative environment needed for major medical advancements.
The expanded space will benefit both the medical staff, who will continue to be able to office on the third floor, as well as patients, who will have access more quickly to the most sophisticated medical equipment available. This equipment includes a fetal echocardiography facility for pregnant women that will allow medical staff to diagnose potential heart defects, prior to birth. A state-of the art hybrid laboratory that can also be configured into an MRI suite, operating room or heart catheterization lab, on demand, is also included in the plans for the heart hospital.
The additional space created by the expansion will also allow for expanded echocardiography rooms and a new specialized recovery area for patients who have to undergo catheterization procedures or cardiac MRI. More patient exam rooms will be added and a technologically sophisticated auditorium to accommodate up to 80 physicians and cardiology staff member for training and seminars will be included.
Housing the Annette Simmons Heart Hospital on the third floor of the hospital is going to allow the integration of the various subspecialty physicians and cardiology staff into a single collaborative entity where the strength of the team can be focused on Children’s most important resource, the patients.
