The Technical and Computational Challenges of Merging Nanoscience and Systems Biology (May 4)
John Wikswo, the director of the Vanderbilt Institute for Integrative Biosystems Research will be giving a presentation called "The Technical and Computational Challenges of Merging Nanoscience and Systems Biology" at 3:30pm on May 4 in the TI Auditorium (room 2.102) in the Engineering and Computer Science South Building on The University of Texas at Dallas campus. The study of how biological systems work together and modeling how one change to a cell or gene affects the rest of an organism should lead to a convergence between biology, biotechnology and nanoscience.
For example, advances in nanotechnology chips should increasingly allow systems biologists to study the impacts when molecules are manipulated, leading to an increased focus on preventative and personalized medicine. But how practical is this? And what are the challenges keeping these convergences from happening? Come to a presentation by John Wikswo, one of the pioneers in overcoming these challenges.
This event is free and open to the public. A reception will follow. For more information, contact keithly@utdallas.edu

Mechanic of Granular Materials (May 9)
Emir Macari - dean and professor of the College of Science, Mathematics and Technology at The University of Texas at Brownsville will be giving a presentation called "Mechanics of Granular Materials" at 4:00pm on May 9 in the TI Auditorium (room 2.102) in the Engineering and Computer Science South building on The University of Texas at Dallas campus.
It is widely accepted that the mechanical behavior of granular materials is largely governed by the interaction of the solid skeleton with fluids present in the pore structure. This interaction is particularly strong in quasi-static and dynamic problems involving geomaterials and may lead to the catastrophic loss of strength resulting in landslides and liquefaction under earthquake loading. This presentation discusses the mechanics of granular materials under low effective stress levels. The results of Micro-gravity experiments about the STS orbiter will be presented.
This event is free and open to the public. For more information, contact keithly@utdallas.edu
