Lunch with CEO of Dresser, Inc (July 7)

Practical Earthquake Prediction (July 7)

The University of Texas at Dallas is hosting a presentation by Professor Yuri A. Kopytenko , Director of the St. Petersburg Branch of the Institute of Terrestrial Magnetism, Ionosphere and Radio Wave Propagation at 2pm on July 7 at the TI Auditorium in the Engineering and Computer Science South Building on The University of Texas at Dallas campus, located at 900 West Campbell in Richardson. Because of their devastating potential, there is great interest in predicting the location and time of large earthquakes. Although a great deal is known about where earthquakes are likely, there is currently no reliable way to predict the days or months when an event will occur in any specific location.

With 18 earthquakes with a magnitude of 7.0 or larger reported worldwide each year, the number of lives that could be saved from a reliable detection system is phenomenal.

Dr. Kopytenko, will discuss the research he is doing using ULF electromagnetic signals as a means of developing a system of predicting earthquakes. Come hear how this close this group is to discovering such a system. Email keithly@utdallas.edu for more information.

Nanotechnology Colloquium - Nanomaterials at Zyvex: From Conception to Consumer Products in Less Than Three Years (July 11)

The Nanotechnology Colloquium is a bi-weekly event to present and discuss issues related to developments, applications and commercialization of nanotechnology. At the July 11 event, Dr. John N. Randall Ph.D., Chief Technical Officer of Zyvex Corporation will be speaking at the Dallas Office of Winstead Sechrest & Minick P.C. located at 5400 Renaissance Tower, 1201 Elm Street Dallas and shown, via video conference to the other offices. The program begins at 11:30am with lunch.

Zyvex's patented Nanosolve(tm) technology has revolutionized the methods of creating Carbon Nanotube (CNT) / polymer composites. Zyvex is using a chemical platform technology to de-bundle, disperse, and change the chemical properties of the CNTs without damaging the molecular structure that gives nanotubes their remarkable properties. This technology was developed in a partnership with NASA through several Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) awards.

Zyvex has achieved significant mechanical, electrical, and thermal property enhancements in a variety of polymer systems including, epoxy, polycarbonate, polystyrene, polyurethane, and others. This technology was brought to market in a dramatically short period of time by a rigorous New Product Development Process. This same process has been used to develop all of Zyvex's products including their very successful line of nanomanipulators.

Zyvex has worked closely with a number of large and small companies to optimize an approach to their application. The presentation will include both technical details of our nanomaterial technology and the product development story that has produced a major deal for CNT material consumer products in less than three years from initial technology conception.

Workshop on Initiating International Projects (July 12)

“Initiating International Projects,” the second one-day workshop in the “Managing Projects Across Borders” series sponsored by the Project Management Program at The University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) School of Management, will be held July 12 from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the school’s Executive Education Center.

Dr. Sue Freedman and Lothar Katz, co-developers of the series, will conduct the workshop. Freedman is also an instructor in the School of Management’s Organizations, Strategy and International Management area, and Katz is a retired Texas Instruments executive with extensive experience in international business.

Katz said that the workshop would focus on requirements that all international projects have in common as well as the specific approaches that foster success when working in or with a given country.

Objectives of the July 12 session include setting up a successful international project from the start, building trust and winning the support of cross-cultural project teams and balancing local ownership and home country accountability.

Jim Joiner, director of UTD’s Project Management Program, explained that the “Managing Project Across Borders” series was designed to cover all aspects of what it takes to make international projects successful.

The first session in the series was held May 10, and subsequent sessions are planned for Sept. 13, Nov. 15, Jan. 17, 2006 and March 14, 2006. The workshops may be taken individually or as a series.

The series is registered with the Project Management Institute. Project management professionals who take all six workshops will earn a professional certificate and eight professional development units (PDUs). The cost to attend each workshop is $299 for UTD students and $595 for others. Lunch and materials will be furnished.
