IEEE Communications and Vehicular Technology Societies: Carrier Class Ethernet Service Delivery Migrating SONET to IP and Triple Play Offerings (April 18)
The April meeting of the Dallas chapter of the IEEE CVT will be held at 11am on April 18 at the Holiday Inn Select, located at 1655 N. Central Expressway in Richardson. Joseph Mocerino from Fujitsu Networks will be speaking on "Carrier Class Ethernet Service Delivery Migrating SONET to IP and Triple Play Offerings." The talk will show how a service provider can migrate a purely SONE T-based network to one offering packet services, while maintaining performance, survivability and efficiently processing packet data. Examples will show the differences in bandwidth, fiber and equipment utilization of SONET versus EoS versus RPR over SONET for carrier-class Ethernet and triple play services.

The Polykarp Kusch Lecture Series: Adam Smith's Lost World of Gratitude (April 18)
Edward J. Harpham, professor of government and political science at The University of Texas at Dallas, will give a lecture titled "Adam Smith's Lost World of Gratitude" as part of the 2006 Polykarp Kusch Lecture Series on Tuesday, April 18 at 12:45 p.m. in the Conference Center, Room 1.112.
His lecture is free and open to the public.
Dr. Harpham currently teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in political theory, American government and Texas politics. Since 1998, Dr. Harpham has been Associate Dean of Undergraduate Education and the Director of Collegium V, UTD's honors program. In 1990-91, he was elected the vice-president of the Southwestern Political Science Association. In 2001-02, he served as the president of the Southwestern Political Science Association.
Harpham is the author and editor of numerous articles and books in the fields of political theory, public policy, and American government. His books include We The People. Texas Edition (W.W. Norton: 2001, 2003, 2005) with Benjamin Ginsberg, Theodore J. Lowi, Margaret Weir, Anthony Champagne and John Forsche, The Rhythms of American Politics (University Press of American: 1998) with Brian J.L. Berry, Euel Elliott and Heja Kim, and John Locke: New Interpretations (University Press of Kansas: 1992).
The unifying theme of Dr. Harpham's work has been the exploration of the relationship between economics and politics.

UTD Research Advisory Board Meeting: Open to the Public (April 25)
The intellectual and economic growth of the University of Texas at Dallas for the past five years is intimately linked to the hard work of distinguished and internationally known individuals who are members of its Research Advisory Board.
For the first time since its creation, this semi-annual Research Advisory Board meeting will be open to the public. This unusual gathering will be UTD's way of introducing to the region this group of globally known outstanding individuals who had been working very hard to build a first rate university in the Metroplex. The event will be held at 9:30am on April 25 at the School of Management Davidson Auditorium (SOM 1.118)
This meeting is organized by the Office of the Vice President for Research & Economic Development. This Office created the external Research Advisory Board to provide insight into research trends, entrepreneurial activities, government liaison, national and global outreach.
The board, which is composed of members of academia and both the commercial and defense industries, will help administrators plan the future of the university's research, assist in maintaining a sense of direction and focus in present research and interact synergistically with UTD's internal research council to build a common view of research and human connectivity.
The focus of the day's meeting will be new research ideas and best practices for technology transfer.
Speakers (and their topics) include:

- Robert Barnhill of UT System (Research and Technology Transfer in the UT System)

The Sixth Annual Emerging Information Technology Conference (EITC-06) (August 10-12)
Besides discussing the cutting-edge topics that will dominate the Global intellectual and economic landscapes will be the theme of this conference for Tech-Titans, the sixth annual Emerging Information Technology Conference (EITC-06) will also feature Mark Ellison from Texas Governor Rick Perry's office of economic development and presidents from some outstanding research universities in the Pacific Rim.
The conference will be held from August 10-12 on The University of Texas at Dallas campus.
Mark Ellison is the Director of the $300 Million Texas Emerging Technology Fund, which was recently approved by Governor Perry and the Texas Legislature to assist the development and commercialization of technologies important to the future of Texas. The Emerging Technology Fund aims to improve university research, expedite the launch of technology firms, and speed transition of inventions from the lab into the hands of consumers.
This year is also the first time for EITC to host a research university presidents forum. For the past two decades, with significant economic growth, research universities in Asia are also seeing unprecedented growth, both in student population as well as research quality and output. The participants so far are from Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Paul C. W. Chu), National Taiwan University (S. C. Lee), National Tsinghua University (W. T. Chen) and National Chiao-Tung University (Vice President W. Hwang). Topics that will be discussed include responsibilities of research universities in the landscape of globalization, recruiting world class scholars, educating versus training the best young minds, and last but not least, promotion and interactions with the corporate worlds and commercialization. Dr. Da Hsuan Feng, Vice President of Research and Economic Development of University of Texas at Dallas will moderate the forum.
The conference will include programs on:
- Nanotechnology,
- MEMS,
- SoC (Systems-on-Chip),
- Bioinformatics,
- C4I (Content, Computer, Communications, Consumer Electronics, and Integration),
